What's that high-pitched squeal from my monitor?

Saturday, 19 August, 2000

My monitor emits a high-pitched squeal. It usually occurs after the monitor has been on some time. It sounds like ringing in the ears, but I am sure that it's not my ears' fault because as soon as I turn the monitor off, it stops. The monitor is a Gateway EV700. Any suggestions before I call Gateway's tech support? Oh, I've also heard it on two other Mitshubishi Diamond monitors.

Raymond Wu Won, ,

You have very good ears -- from memory, that squeal is 18 kHz and comes from the HT transformer core. You shouldn't hear it from a modern monitor with a solid transformer core, but maybe this is an el cheapo.

Smmack it on the side. Usually the squealing will stop at least temporarily.

somtimes flipping the moniter on its side, upsidedown, or what have you will fix this.. and some graphics properties will allow you to rotate the display so it doesnt look upside down etc...

mine is an hold or hancient 1996 or so 21" moniter.. Its weighs more than I am comfortable picking up (80 lbs?)

anyway its sqealing now.. but so far no trick has worked

Hey, that happens to a couple of the school iMacs and probably the eMacs too.
