What DVI do I ask for?

Sunday, 29 November, 2009

My dvi doesnt seem to function well. When I go to the store, do I just ask for a dvi, or who would they know what type of dvi my computer uses?

Jose , ,

If you ask for a DVI I haven't the faintest idea of what they'dove you. There's no such object.

If you mean a DVI cable, then they either work or they don't. So what's wrong with what you have?

What are you expecting to get when you go to the store Jose?

re: What DVI do I ask for?
IF Jose is trying to hook up a new Video-card (w/ a DVI socket!)...to an old CRT monitor, there is a slim possibilty that there is an adaptor available, to help in converting that old CRT monitor to work a DVI video-card? (But,don't hold your breath....on it actually working! Because the CRT monitor is based on the Analogue signal, not DVI, doesn't actually have a corresponding DVI socket, anyway.)
Having a CRT monitor...brings into question....the age of this conputer.
If it's more than 10 year old....time to do a complete upgrade! (Of whole computer, not just part of it, which most people tend to think that they only need to do.)
There may be a possibility (that in Jose saying that his DVI is not working well!)....that the DVI cable he has...is not up to scratch (slightly broken)....Solution: get another one.
(Simple enough for you, Jose?)

Err...read the manual?

If you don't have the manual for the "devices", find the MODEL number and try searching for it in a websearch or at the manufacturer's website. See how it uses DVI. If the output is DVI and the input is DVI (not VGA or HDMI), there should not be much to check (or replace).

You might need a computer knowledgeable friend or family member to look at it and give you some directives.

re: What DVI do I ask for?
I have a feeling this relates to connecting a PC to a TV or monitor. I had a great deal of issues getting an older DVI out video card to a large screen TV. In the end, I went and bought a video card that has HDMI output on it. DVI to HDMI is very much a "maybe it will, and maybe it won't" thing in my experience. If I am on the wrong track, Jose needs to be a little clearer in what they want to do.
