How do I convert this IDE to SATA?

Tuesday, 27 November, 2007

I had a problem in my HP hardisk, I deleted everything in it, repartitioned it, & installed windows 98 :s because I tried to install window xp and the installation didnt see the hardisk, so i disabled the SATA, when the Win98 started it started defining the IDE Driver, I run a WinXP installation again and it worked! How can I get drivers for Sata, I want to convert the IDE to SATA..

Kindly Advice please..

Ayham Ov, ,

Sorry Ayham, but I don't understand what your question is.

IDE and SATA disks are two different things.

Perhaps you should book your computer in for a service. A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Perhaps some other readers can help you.

re: How do I convert this IDE to SATA?
Simple
configure the SATA as a slave and set the R323 jumper to high setting on mobo and reboot, then go to control panel and disable all drives- set the mode to auto and then pour yourself a double scotch and type up your latest set of train numbers and thank the lord that you are living in such a wonderful world that allows geeks to thrive and multiply by speaking in wonderful gobbledegook to each other.

He may mean how to connect an ide drive to a sata connection. If this is the case you can purchase a device which plugs onto the back of the ide drive which then allows you to connect with sata cables .

re: How do I convert this IDE to SATA?
Ayham, toss the Win 98, as most Win 98 programs/games will work fine under XP (IF you use the Compatiability Wizard, with them).
As for what you are doing with the IDE/SATA configuration, let's see ?
Are you trying to use SATA, as an IDE 'set-up' ?
You can, IF the motherboard's BIOS says " YOU CAN " !
Are you trying to set up SATA, in a RAID 'configuration'.....in conjunction with a IDE Hard-drive ?
I agree with Anthony/Larry.

You need to INSTALL the RAID 'drivers' (after you have 'configured' the BIOS, to 'activate' the RAID 'extension' within BIOS, in other words!)

The way you wrote your enquiry, it sounds like you do have a 'hybrid motherboard'...one uses IDE (with SATA, in RAID configuration).
Be serious, friend, study your motherboard's MANUAL (if you still have it ?)..as this does properly 'explains' .."How to do it. "
Failing to do that, would suggest very strongly, this bit of advice..."Quit fooling with your computer, take it to a computer-shop and pay for them to fix yours. "
Their 'work' is guaranteed !
Yours is not !

re: How do I convert this IDE to SATA?
If i get the question correctly, Ahyam is trying to install a sata drive in his computer and use both ide and sata drives. Where he may be going wrong is it is tricky to get winows 98 to run on a sata or get it to recognise sata devices at all. He also must have all ide drives on one ide channel as when sata is enabled only one ide channel is in operation and the other is disabled by the bios. I think this is his problem as he said the drive was not recognised. Install the ide drive and cd/dvd drive on one ide cable only and set the jumpers to make the harddrive master and the cd/dvd drive slave. connect the ide cable to the primary ide connector on the mainboard. If this fails to be seen then try the secondary ide connector as some bios programs vary as to which channel it disables. Enable compatability mode in the bios and try again. Windows 98 may have issues so download windows 98 unofficial service pack 2 to fix the problems. It worked for me.

re: How do I convert this IDE to SATA?
Assuming he meant that he disabled sata in bios and changed to ide compatability mode, then he has no need for drivers to install XP as he has done already.
If he can install 98 he can install XP.
If that is the case, using sata drivers for XP will be no advantage, the drive will still operate at the same speed.
XP with SP1 or higher required for sata support.

re: How do I convert this IDE to SATA?
I think Ayham has IDE and SATA drives. His machine wants to boot from SATA but he can't install the operating system - perhaps because get can't do F6 to install the divers. It maybe he has a PCI card that he is using to get SATA connection.

Um...........???????

re: How do I convert this IDE to SATA?
I think Ayham is currently running a single SATA driver in IDE mode under the BIOS and now wants to change it to a RAID setup.

As for the installation fault, I think Ayham forgot to install the SATA driver the first time around.

This is only a guess from what I can determine from the description.
