I have 310,000 files on my computer

Monday, 22 June, 2009

I have 310,000 files on my computer and last March when Internet Explorer 8 was introduced, for some reason all my files almost doubled in volume.

I did have 70% free space and now I only have 58% I have checked my C: drive and I am not sure what I can or cannot delete. I regularly do a defrag and cleanup and I have also reset Internet Explorer from the advanced button but it is still so slow.

I have a Pentium 4 Processor 505, 256 MB and 60GB hard drive. When I go into control panel, add and remove programs, there are so many updates and I am wondering if this what is slowing it down. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Linda Collins, , UK

There are quite a few factors there Linda. It might be time to see if you know a computer whiz who can visit and clean up your system.

Meanwhile, here are a few observations and tips:
  1. It probably isn't IE8 that's taken up the extra space, but nothing is impossible,
  2. IE8 isn't liked by everyone. (OK. I haven't met anyone who likes it.)
  3. 256M of RAM is very small. If at all possible get that increased. 2 gigabytes would be a good target.
  4. You could download and try Mozilla Firefox as your browser. Most users are quite happy with it.
  5. 60M is a smallish hard disk but should be quite usable if you keep it clean.
  6. There are some good, free utilities which will help clean your system and make it run better. I particularly like Glary Utilities.
  7. Don;t forget to uninstall any programs you no longer need.

re: I have 310,000 files on my computer
Linda, your computer is running slooooow.
For all the reasons these guys have stated.
256Mb of RAM?
XP barely wakes up, wants to run...with that amount of Ram.
(You've probably found out already...that you can barely open more than 1 Page/Window...at a time! And,it completely frustrates you...with it's slowness.)
That's the reason 'why'.
(One of many, I think.)
Do you DELete your 'cookies' regularly? (Like every time you have finished with using the Internet/Browsing/?)
I'd say "No" here.
(Do it, make it a 'daily habit' to do...evry time you use the Internet, in fact. You be surprised at the 'pick-up' your may show to have.)
Defintely more RAM. (Max your computer out....with whatever it is capable of using. This will also increase it's speed. That's what the others are also advising you to do.)
I run 4 Gig (of RAM)..on mine.
Get yourself..that LARGER Hard-drive, too.
(It will work, as Frank has said, to make the 'Virtual Memory'(the Swap-File section of all computers) work even better.)
I run 2x250 Gig hard-drives...on mine. (Still haven't gotten around to using the second one yet. The 1st one is only using 16.7 Gigs..of a 250 Gig hard-drive, get the point,Linda?)
Use "Glary" or "CCleaner". To tidy up your computer, as the others have also suggested. With good reason.
(I use "CCleaner", found it to work well enough..for me.)
Develop your computer skills, by improving the health of your computer..is what we're all saying here.
You do that, you will think of how silly you was....in not doing it all...in the first place.

re: I have 310,000 files on my computer
Maybe some other areas...

Windows Clean-up does not delete all the files in the Temporary Internet Files folder. Control Panel -> Internet Options -> General tab -> Browsing History -> Delete, will delete them. The Temporary Internet Files folder will be set to 10% of the size of the drive, you can reduce that to 100MB or less. An antimalware program will want to constantly scan those. If you use a "local" based email (eg, Outlook) clean out all unwanted mail. Consider using web-based email so that they don't download onto your HDD and need to be constantly scanned by the antivirus.

System Restore will be set to 12% of your drive/s by default.

Run Error Checking (CHKDSK) on the drive (on each drive, if you have more than one [C:]). See Help and Support.

I have seen several systems recently where the HDD had reverted to PIO mode (the lowest access speed). The fix is to uninstall the IDE controllers in Device Manager and reboot.

Prescott LGA775 P4 505 2.66GHz 1MB cache 533FSB HT CPU with only 256MB ram and a 60GIG Hardrive and you want more zing?, ummmm.....

At the price of memory go and buy yourself two 1GIG sticks of DDR2 PC6400 as your motherboard may support DUAL CHANNEL and have them fitted properly and....

Possibly at the same time if you can afford it purchase another HARDDRIVE say 160 to 500GB to add as a slave. This will give you more storage space for example video/audio files and backups.

All this can be had reasonably cheaply and give you a nice boost in productivity.

A few little tips: like Paul has stated run a good cleanup utility such as Glary or C-Cleaner as the Windows ones arn`t very good house keepers.

Use your 60GIG Drive only for your Operating System and Programs. Keep at least 50 to 30 percent free for efficiency. Thats where the SLAVE comes handy.

Right Click My Computer then click ADVANCED then SETTINGS and in VISUAL EFFECTS UNCHECK all the animate/fade/show/slide boxes for a small boost.

Turn off background running programs and services you dont need but only if you know what you are doing. There`s plenty on the WEB about this.

And if you have Norton AntiVirus on with 256MB RAM it'll be like trying to climb Mount Everest with your teeth.

Perhaps you will be best served to back up your important information, re-install Windows, and bump up the memory to AT LEAST 512MB RAM.
