We have a new LCD TV and I'm trying to work out the inputs. Our Foxtel IQ box has various outputs and we'd been using the SCART socket outputting to a component cable into our old TV.
What do you think about my idea to buy an upscaler/converter to take the component output and the digital audio output and combine them into an HDMI signal/

I'm not sure why you'd need to do that. Are you expecting some benefit?
Presumably your new TV has component inputs as well as HDMI. I can't see that an upscaler would do any better job than the TV itself would. (Most HD TVs do a good job with SD signals.)
From what I can see those upscalers cost at least $300
Anyway, if you want full digital transfer of the video, that won't do it as there's still an analog link in there. Why not upgrade your IQ to the IQ2 box instead? It has native HDMI output already, has a bigger hard disk and extra tuners. KISS.
