Why can't the tuner card receive Foxtel?

How do I connect my Foxtel to my TV tuner card (Aver Media Digital)?
I've used a splitter to split the signal from the set-top box so that one coaxial cable goes to the decoder and the other goes to the aerial input in the back of the tuner card. I have done an all channel scan and a quick scan but the card can only pick up the free to air channels (ABC, SBS and so on.) but not Foxtel. This means the coaxial cable works but cant pick up the Foxtel Channels. My set-top box was on.
Do I use a different cable and plug it in the S-video or the extension input? I saw an article written by Michael Moore a while back and he mentioned connecting Foxtel to your TV tuner card if you have a set-top box and a subscription, which I do, but didn't mention how to connect them together exactly.

You need to know a bit about how the different systems work to know what you can and can't do.
Free to air TV transmits in the VHF and UHF bands -- from below 100 MHz (the FM radio band) to a few hundred MHz. In many parts of Australia this is now broadcast not only as the old analog system, but on adjacent frequencies, as a digital signal. You need totally different receiving systems. Most TV tuner cards are the old analog system, but there are new digital ones.
The various pay TV systems broadcast via cable (in the street) or satellite. Foxtel has both (and you don't say which you have). However, all pay TV signals are encrypted, otherwise people would be able to pick them up without paying for them. That's the purpose of the set-top box -- to ensure that you're a legitimate subscriber, and decode the signal and present it as something you can watch.
If you connect the raw pay TV signal to the TV tuner card it won't see anything it can use, so it ignores it. The only way to do it is to treat the signal coming out of the set-top box as you would any other video source (such as a VCR or console game) and plug it into the video and audio in ports on the tuner card and PC. Or you can feed the RF (antenna) output from the set top box to the tuner card, so the pay TV channel is just another TV channel. Either way, you can only watch the program that the set top box is set to.
(A typical way to connect things is like this: TV antenna goes VCR then to set top box then to a 2-way splitter and splits to the TV and the PC's tuner card. Or if there's enough signal, use a multi-way splitter at the end and feed multiple TV's.)
However, you can rent a second set top box from Foxtel (I think it's around $20 a month) and put that next to the PC so you can watch a different channel to the rest of the family.
The Foxtel satellite set top box has some data ports on the back, and I'd be interested to hear from any readers who know if these can be used to feed the digital signal direct to the PC. The same would presumably apply later this year when Foxtel launches its digital cable service. This would still only allow the one channel at a time but would maintain the digital quality.
(And yes, I know that the Shopping channel isn't locked -- for some reason they want you to be able to see that even if you have your Foxtel turned off for a while.)Paul Zucker

mattPosted: 23/02/2009 re: Why can't the tuner card receive Foxtel? if you get the avermedia avertv hybrid volar hx, it comes with a cord you conect to the side of the tuner & on the other end of the cord, you have the three colours & an s-video cord. plug the foxtel into that & press record. easy.
I recorded the whole superbowl on espn with no fuss
P.S. It is a usb tuner used preferably for laptops.
(Yes, but the tuner card isn't receivibg Foxtel. It's accepting a video signal from the Foxtel box. If you dpn;t understand the difference I can't help you. -PZ) greg jacksonPosted: 02/01/2008 re: Why can't the tuner card receive Foxtel? Rf out on Foxtel is analogue, even on Fox IQ (both outlets), so you need an analogue tuner to catch UHF 41 (the factory preset). You can change it (system settings), as others have detailed, but I found I didn't need to.
Just doesn't work with a digital tuner, unless you organise analogue to digital conversion. Not worth it.
Why use rf out? So I can catch box office programmes on my DVD's tuner's HD and keep them. Normally I use scart to composite to watch Fox live or record it on the Foxtel box's HD, but the box office recordings disappear after 1 watch and then 24 hr elapses.
(Using the RF output to record onto DVD is the WORST way to do it. The qualty is much lower than usng a direct video feed. S-Video is probably your best bet. -PZ) bobPosted: 26/02/2007 re: Why can't the tuner card receive Foxtel? Analog foxtel is gone and YES you could tune it in using your tuner cards with ALL channels but not any more. No foxtel box was needed..just a little program called hncplus. Someone will eventually work out the digital setups too.
(So where did this magic Foxtel signal come from Bob? -PZ) GeoffPosted: 22/02/2007 re: Why can't the tuner card receive Foxtel? I have plugged the RF output from the foxtel settop box into my twinhan digital tuner but the channel scan cannot find the foxtel signal. Can you tell me the frequency and bandwidth of the foxtel rf output?
(If the autoscan can't find it, I'd say it isn't working. Try it on a regular TV set to see if it's working. Otherwise call Foxtel for help. -PZ) just sayingPosted: 10/10/2006 re: Why can't the tuner card receive Foxtel? would a vhf receiver fro weather satellites work i no i get signals but will i still need to decode it.
(Yes, receiving the signal is absolutely no good without the decoder, which of course must be paid for monthly. However, some people are "lucky" enough to get the shopping channel free. -Paul Zucker) Posted: 10/12/2004 re: Why can't the tuner card receive Foxtel? The avermedia DVB-T card connects using the A/V cables (red/white/yellow) as though the foxtel was a VCR then you dont need to tune it in. But it wont be digital. amanda huginkissPosted: 07/07/2004 re: Why can't the tuner card receive Foxtel? you could get a smartcard with a decription program on it to go into a set top box jonPosted: 15/02/2004 re: Why can't the tuner card receive Foxtel? obtain a 2 way rf splitter, 1 in 2 out reverse it,
connect FTA and the RF (tv out) from foxtel decoder connect single output to your tuner card retune your card. foxtel ch should appear on uhf ch36
(You don't need to do that Jon. The Foxtel box has RF-in and RF-out sockets, so it just goes in the circuit as I explained in the answer. -Paul Zucker)
