How do I downgrade XP Pro to Home?

Friday, 12 March, 2010

OLD QUESTION

I've upgraded to XP Pro but it's too slow to run. I want to go back to XP Home. How do I do this?

(Originally posted April 2007)

Mike Donovan, ,

The short answer is that you have to back up your data and do a clean installation of Windows XP Home Edition.

You can’t do a downgrade from XP Professional to XP Home Edition the same way you probably did the upgrade: by autoplaying the XP CD in Windows and clicking Install Windows XP. If you’ve tried this you’ll know that you get a box saying Microsoft doesn’t support upgrading from Pro to Home. After you clear the box the only option is a new installation, which means either wiping your existing installation of XP Professional (and all the installed programs and data) or installing XP Home Edition on a separate partition, which must exist before you run Setup from the CD. If you choose the latter, the two installations will dual boot, and you can choose between them from the Boot Options Menu when you start your PC.

To return to XP Home Edition, you should first back up all of your data and settings. You can use ‘Files and Settings Transfer wizard’ (listed on Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools) for most of this, but it won’t pick up the settings for most non-Microsoft applications. Also, you’ll need either a second partition on your hard disk or external storage for this data. After you install XP Home Edition, you’ll have to reinstall all of your applications before you apply the new

By the way, I’m surprised XP Professional is any slower (or faster) than Home Edition was, and this may be due to your upgrading rather than doing a clean installation. Since you’re going to have to back up everything anyway, I recommend you try doing a clean installation of XP Professional as described above for Home Edition to see how this goes.

Finally, for the benefit of others, if you have a Service Pack applied to XP Home Edition, Setup won’t let you do an upgrade to XP Professional unless that Service Pack or later is integrated the installation files on the CD. If the CD doesn’t have the Service Pack, Setup will say your existing installation of Windows is later than the one on the CD, and your only options are some useless Details or Cancel.

(I'll add my two-pennorth here Mike. I'd be a rich man if I had 10c for every time someone had it in their mind that X is better than Y, but with no good reason for thinking that. Perhaps you'd be better of making sure your system was up to scratch before downgrading the OS. Is you hard disk overcrowded? Do you have too many useless programs loaded? Can you afford to add another 256M of RAM. Are there bits of hardware loaded that you don't need? Do you have a proper set of Internet security software running? Have you installed SP2? Are you loading too many apps at startup? I'd be checking these things before downgrading the PC. -Paul Zucker)

The ModeSwitch program is a step in the right direction.

But this leaves one problem... changing the XP Professional Key to an XP Home Key. None of the usual programs and tricks seem to work.

Basically, now I have an XP Home installation with an XP Professional key and am unable to change it to the one matching the COA stuck on the side of the case.

can windows Xp professional be loaded on two home PCs
can windows Xp professional be loaded on two home PCs

(That depends on the product, but as far as I know, NO, not legally. -PZ)

The authors of some of the previous posts make the incorrect assumption that the only reason someone would want to downgrade is because of performance issues, and based on that false assumption, they give all sorts of hints on how to increase performance instead of answering the question about downgrading.
My sister has a simpler reason for wanting to downgrade. The reason is that her son had installed a pirated copy of XP Pro on her computer but she only has a legal licence for XP Home. She simply wants to be legal.

re: How do I downgrade XP Pro to Home?
Mike,I suspect (from what you're saying ) is this....that your computer DOES run OK, with XP HOME.
Of course, it will !
On a computer 'not up to scratch'...to handle XP PRO!
XP Home is XP PRO (without ALL the 'bells-n-whistles').
XP PRO is very 'resources hungry'.....you add something like any Norton program (which is the same 'resources hungry' as XP PRO, to that (your computer), what do you think is going happen ?
Your computer will go even slower (if ONLY using 512Mb od RAM, it definitely WILL !)
Throw into that mix......not DELETING the COOKIES on a DAILY basis (like every time you leave the Internet)...your computer will go even slower.
My ADVICE !
BEEF up the RAM , in your computer, to at least 1GB.
Get a Anti-Virus program, that does not HOG these 'precious' resources.
Last of all, most inportant of all, START getting into the HABIT .....of DELETING those COOKIES, when you're finished with the Internet.
Do the 'above'....you can keep on using XP PRO,no need to 'revert' back to XP HOME.

re: How do I downgrade XP Pro to Home?
To downgrade from Pro to Home is crazy, i bet you hav'nt optimised all your settings yet as Pro loads with most settings switched to high so it looks pretty and most users can just jump on and use the computer and most of everything works.

re: How do I downgrade XP Pro to Home?
There is a way to downgrade Windows XP Pro to Home. I described it on my websites @ www.filewalker.de.

Basically you have to modify the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ProductOptions registry key, to fit the XP Home■s specs:

(Windows XP Home, ProductSuite: Personal, ProductType: WinNT)

You cannot simply edit the key via regedit, because this key gets monitored by the system, you have to do it with a workaround by creating a copy of the System-Hive, edit this copy, and then place it back. For this purpose i wrote a small tool called WinModeSwitch, which automates this process.

When it is done, you can quite easily do a repair installation with your XP Home Install CD. Thats it.

re: How do I downgrade XP Pro to Home?
Well, actually i haven't got the solution, but I've heard and browsed that it's possible to upgrade the CD from Home to Pro and vice versa, so I come to conclusion that Windows XP Pro and Home is the same CD, only when you enter the license number then it will be deployed as Pro or Home. My friend said that there's a small program to downgrade it just by changing the license number, but he wouldn't give me that. (What a weird friend, don't you think), so keep looking.

(Have you ever heard the term "urban myth" or the term "there's one born every minute"? Some people will believe what they choose to believe, regardless of the truth. -PZ)

re: Can windows xp be put onto multiable systems just by using one cd?
i would just like to know if it is possiable to put windows xp onto multiable systems just by useing the one cd? thanks

(Yes, it's possible, but you'll only be able to activate one copy so the others won't be protected by Micrsosoft updates. It's not legal to do it. -PZ)

re: How do I downgrade XP Pro to Home?
Mike. April fools day has come and gone but being serious, are you kidding? I often get friends asking me over to check their pcs and the amount of crap on their Hard Drive is usually incredible. The other thing that amazes me is that they don't perform basic maintenence like disc cleaning or defragmentation on a regular basis. You cannot expect any computer to run quickly if it's clogged with crap or your files are so badly defragmented that even two or three GIG of RAM cannot find what you're looking for (an exaggeration but you get the point). I use Trend PC-Cillin Internet Security 2007 and Ad-Aware and i run a scan everyday to make sure that i'm spyware and virus free. I am well aware that this takes time but it is time well spent believe me. This is what i would do. First thing, disable your screen saver if you have one running. A screen saver is a small programme that runs in the background and if you're doing maintenence it will add time to the job. Secondly, make sure all programmes are closed and run Disc CleanUp to get rid of all but the most recent restore point. While System Restore can be a godsend, if you have too many restore points this can slow your pc down cosiderably. The next thing to do is to Defragment your Hard Drive. This can take a while so rather than stare at your monitor, just check it from time to time until it finishes the job. Go into Add or Remove programmes and carefully check over what's installed on your system. If you find a programme you rarely use or more to the point you don't use, un-install it to optimize space. The next thing i do is the most important thing i can think of. Go online and update all your internet security systems including Microsofts update page to make sure you have all the latest patches, hotfixes etc. Go offline and run your anti-virus and anti-spyware tools. The reason i tell people to go offline when doing this is so that their security systems don't have to deal with outside traffic while performing their job. This should clear up a lot of crap and make sure you computer is as fast as it can be. The previous reader, Darrin also makes a good point. Is your hard ware up to the job? If after all this and your pc is as slow as a wet week, going back to XP home will not help the problem. I did an upgrade from Home to Pro three years ago and i've never looked back. I suspect that there could be problems with your system that you cannot see (you did'nt give us much info in your question). Also, i don't know how computer savvy you are either. These solutions are meant to be a common sense guide but if you are on the ball with pcs, my advice is sent with kind. Cheers Mate Andy :) :) PS: Mr Zucker. I turned 46 on the 9th. No smart comments please cos i will always be prettier and younger than you. LMAO..he he

(Well Happy Birthday Mr Collins. -PZ :-)

re: How do I downgrade XP Pro to Home?
I would also be asking after the upgrade, have you installed the latest chipset, video card and other drivers because the upgrade may have affected how the sytem interacts with the OS.
