Why can't I convert DVD to VCD?

Tuesday, 02 December, 2003

From PC User I read about how to turn a DVD into a VCD. I tried to do it but it didn't work. I followed the instructions to decrypt the DVD using the software provided on the cover disk. It worked successfully. But after that the instructions where to open the dvd2avi program that was also provided in the cover disk. It told me to change the settings of the clips that were decrypted from the DVD. It said:

  1. Go to video then colour space and tick the RGB 24-bit option.
  2. Then go down and check the YUV-RGB to see if it was on TV scale
  3. Go to audio, output method, decode to WAV, and then select 48 44.1 kHz and check the high option.
  4. Then it said to save the project in the same folder as the original VOB files.
  5. Then the magazine had said to go to the program TMPGEnc, and a wizard will pop up asking what disk format do you want to use and I clicked Video-CD PAL as the magazine directed. after that the magazine said to click next and the next section was to load the files that I had saved in DVD2AVI previously.

I did all the stuff that it has directed me to correctly and many times as well. I did it many, many times as well. But once I tried to load the files in DVD2AVI that I saved before, a message pops up and says:

File "C:\Documents and settings\Derrick Leung\Desktop\DVD movies\lord.d2v" can not open, or unsupported.

So if this occurs what have I done wrong? How can I fix this problem? Is it my computer? Is it the program that makes this
problem occur? Is it me?

The "file cannot open is not supported" message is not uncommon with TMPGEnc. However the fixes offered are quite varied.

The main two you can try are:
  1. In TMPGEnc go to "options" to "Environmental settings" to "vfapi Plugins" and raise the "Direct show" to "2"
  2. If no luck with A, try decompressing the audio in the AVI file before encoding. You can do this with VirtualDUB.

    1. Click Video - Direct Stream Copy.
    2. Click Audio - Full Processing Mode.
    3. Click Audio - Compression. Select <No compression (PCM)> and click OK!
    4. Click File - Save AVI and then try it with TMPGEnc.

i have Small vdv disk I wand convert to cvd.

(If you can play it on your PC then you should be able to capture the video and downconvert it to CD. It's got nothing to do with size, colour, religion or outside weather. -Paul Zucker)

why bother with converting to VCD? With DVD burners so cheeep these days (<$300) save up some $$$ and get one of them. You can then playback the recorded movier in DVD quality.
