Why won't my removable storage devices work?

Thursday, 01 November, 2007

My "Lexar JumpDrive Trio" and "Toshiba JNC iAudio M3" refuse to work with my new computer. They both work on other computers, like the ones at my library. But when I plug them into my new computer, a box which usually reports that the drivers are loading, displays a message that

    "The device has malfunctioned"

The JumpDrive is displayed as being a FAT drive, and the MP3 as a FAT32 device on the computers at my school. Is there some way to make my new computer support these formats? I have a P5P800MX motherboard and Windows XP Professional.

Thanks,

I reckon that problems with USB drives, MP3 players and the like are among the most common complaints I see nowadays! “The device has malfunctioned”.  “Drive not formatted” and the like are the sort of error messages experienced.

I’m sorry, but I just don’t have a definitive answer. The file formats are supported ones. The unit may be kaput but it may not be either. Try the following:
  • Ensure all Windows updates are installed
  • Check the system or motherboard manufacturer websites for the latest motherboard chipset drivers and install them.
  • Check the system or motherboard manufacturer websites for USB 2.0 patches or updates, and install any that are available.
  • Using System Properties, Device Manager, locate and uninstall any USB controllers, reboot, and allow them to be re-detected and reinstalled.
  • Ensure that you system case has suitable cabling if the devices are connected via front panel USB ports. Try rear USB ports to see if they make any difference. The front ones may not be adequate.
  • Your relatively new system should be okay, but those people whose Windows installation is becoming ‘weather-beaten’ would be well advised to do the dreaded ‘format/fresh install’.

Sorry I can’t give more specific advice, Chris. All I can really say is that I sympathise. I’ve seen so many people experience problems or lose data after using such devices that I wouldn’t have one myself in a pink fit!

re: kingston data 4gb traveller
Ok,i recently went to sao paolo and took some pictures with my camera. I transferred the pictures from the camera onto computer then onto the data stick. there is about 150 pictures. I came back from brazil and tried to open the pictures to copy onto my new computer, but the only thing it says is; F:\is not accessible
The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. I cannot access any of the pictures even though my computer recognizes the drive.
What can i do? Thanks in advance

(Go to a digital photo shop and they should be able to recover the pictures for you and burn them to CD or DVD. -PZ)

Ok, so grab the actual disk and look at the side. There is a tiny switch. You might not see it but it is there. Your card might show it with the word lock on it. It should be on the left side. You have 2 push it up for it 3 unlock

My Lexar Jump Drive 1 GB wouldn't work. Bought a Kingston DT 4GB on sale. Also would not work.. Saw on Vista support thread, this site: http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtrouble_e.html#xp_asks_for_drivers

Read the section about Vista deleting USBSTOR.INF.. I restored the files, then updated the drivers through device manager. It worked like a charm.

cyclic reduency check
I have kingstonee Data traveler 4GB when i inset in USB port ,it appear on screen that; Data error (cyclic redundancy check) box will appear how can i fix it. Please give me instructions how can i recover and fix.

(Well, it could be that the device is faulty. The first thing to try is to reformat it. Check the Kingston site to see if there are any utilities. If it's new and faulty, get it replaced under warranty.-PZ)

I recently had same problem with LG usb stick. Worked on every computer ( XP and Vista) except on networked XP computer at work. Tried many things but as Mark mentioned, i put it in front slot and then a boot up from cold boot. Took a little while but works fine now when inserted with computer running.

re: Why won't my removable storage devices work?
Try plugging your memory stick/HDD into your USB port BEFORE you turn your computer on.
Don't ask my why this works, just try it.

re: Why won't my removable storage devices work?
With XP HOME or PRO make sure you have SERVICE PACK 2 as it contains some updates and drivers related to this USB DRIVE ISSUE, but be warned, SP2 has also been known to conflict with certain programs that you might have installed previously.
And to WOLF`S POST, depending on your computer, your 2 FRONT USB PORTS may be internally configuered as USB1.1 and USB2.0.
And on hindsight check your BIOS first.

i have two USB slot in front. My portable HDD didn't work when i plug in any one of which and show "USB device not recognised". However, if i plug in a thumbdrive first on one USB slot then the HDD into the other slot, it works... i don't know why perhaps anyone could explain to me (and a solution to the proper method)...

re: why my stored images in the pendrive are not been displayed and opening?
I have a pendrive where i have stored images in it,but it cant been seen. From the properties i can see the disk size is occupied with half volume. But why my disk is not allowing to open the images, which are present in it.Please consider my problem and give me the solution.

(Since these problems seem to depend on the PC being used, why not try to recover them on a friend's PC and copy them to CD. Otherwise there are commercial software products that guarantee to recover data from corrupted pen drives. -PZ)

re: Why won't my removable storage devices work?
I recently suffered the same problem of USB device "not recognized" or "has malfunctioned" being my printer and a flash stick, I searched the net and lots of forums and after trying numerous things like those listed above, I found one sugestion that worked for me. Turn the computer off and remove it from any power supply for 30 mins then reconnect and boot up as normal. Try the USB device, it worked for me. /can't explain it but it worked.

re: Why won't my removable storage devices work?
I got a Kingston Data Traveller 256MB (Pendrive) from market. I have Laptop of Toshiba Company. Its model is Toshiba, Satellite 4000CDS. It is Pentium II which operates Window 98. I tried to operate my data traveller in it, but it did not worked. I got some driver from internet from Kingson.com site. But still it did not work. I took it to the service provider but he could not fixed it. I need to operate it in my Laptop to transfor my data to other computer. I checked my data travellor in other computer in which Window XP was running. It worked in it. I am very shocked. How can I poerate my pendrive (data travellor) in my Laptop. The model no. of my Data Travellor is KUSB/256FE.

I've had similar probs with external hard-drive enclosures as well. I recently bought a new hdd enclosure but it only allows me to transfer data into the drive and not out of it. It works fine on every other machine...

re: Why won't my removable storage devices work?
A further point to note in relation to 'front' USB ports is that often they have not been connected correctly. The wires, motherboard header pins and the plugs on the end of the front panel leads can be fiddly and confusing to connect. If there is any chance that someone has altered them at any stage, or if the PC is home assembled, then it may be worthwhile to have a technician check that they are correctly connected.

re: Why won't my removable storage devices work?
I have found that error sometime occurs if you plug them into the USB ports on the case "ie at the front of the computer" try the ones at the back as they are usually more stable.
