How do I connect a DVD player to Foxtel IQ?

Friday, 29 January, 2010

OLDER QUESTION

I have Foxtel IQ and was wondering how you connect a DVD player into it.

The Foxtel IQ box has two SCART sockets on it. One of these is used to feed out to a TV set or monitor. It can be set to use a couple of different standards, including component video.

There is also a second SCART socket which has inputs and outputs that are meant to be used with a VCR. However, there's no reason why you can't use the inputs of this connector to feed in the video and audio from a DVD player.

So far, so good. But how does this help? Easy - there's a button on the top-left of the IQ controller called AV and pressing this connects the DVD player straight through to the TV screen. Neat, eh?

You can buy the necessary SCART cables at stores such as Dick Smith Electronics and Jaycar. Foxtel does a range of blister-packed leads and accessories now.

Here is a detailed description of the SCART connections from Foxtel.

re: How do I connect a DVD player to Foxtel IQ?
All i have to do to get angry is hear the word "SCART" Cable. A friend of mine wanted me to connect audio/video to his TV in the mid 90s which only had a scart plug for everything. While i was doing this, my friend Garry stepped on the male end of the plug by accident. When i saw what he'd done i just said "oh no"! Trying to straighten out the pins was impossible so he had to get another scart cable because the other one was just useless. Whoever thought of the idea of SCART connectors needs a good kick in the arse. I cannot believe they still use these connectors in this day and age and i thought RCA leads were bad. Cheers Andy:)

(I'm with you Andy. Scart never took off in Australia but very popukar in Europe I'm told. -PZ)

Hi, I've got my DVD recorder and Foxtel IQ set up the same way, but I can't seem to be able to get a foxtel channel so I can record it from the DVD recorder.

(Easy answer, though annoying. The DVD pass-through is SCART to SCART. That is, you can only see the DVD picture on something connected to the SCART output of the IQ. It bypasses the IQ and doesn't get put on the TV channel output of the IQ. Does that make sense? -PZ)

i have 1 av1 input on my LCD TV which i used to use for my DVD player but since i got foxtel they have used that av1 input. How can i connect my DVD player without taking the foxtel cables off to connect my DVD player?

(Did you read the answer above? -PZ)

What is not obvious from the instructions is that you need to use the two SCART connectors. One to feed into the box and the other as a composite video output to the TV. I tried it without the second SCART using the coax output to the TV without success.
The foxtel and similar SCART cables are fairly expensive between 40 and $60 ea. You need two. Happened to go past JB HiFi where they had SCART to RCA/Svideo adapters for about $13. A much more satisfying result.
All I need to do now is to get the TV to stay on the AV channel when it is turned off rather than reverting to the normal channels.

(Good point Michael. -PZ)
