I want to use DVI

Sunday, 03 August, 2008

I have Viewsonic TFT monitor with DVI port.

I have an Intel mother board D 945GCPE.

I want to know how to use this port or add a graphics card for using the DVI port.

Roop Narayan, ,

Why do you want to use the DVI port on the monitor? Is it the only port it has? If the monitor has a VGA port then you can use that with your existing PC.

Theoretically you'll get a better picture with the DVI port as it's digital while VGA is analog, but most people wouldn't see any difference under normal circumstances.

I'm sure you could buy a convertor that would take a VGA signal and convert it to DVI but that would be more expensive than buying a new graphics card and it wouldn't improve the picture one little bit.. You can usually run a VGA monitor from a DVI port on a PC but that's because the VGA signal is already there - there's no conversion required.

I assume that the board doesn't have a DVI port or you wouldn't have to be asking this question. So you'll have to add a graphics card to get the port you want. Just about any graphics card that will fit the motherboard will have a DVI port, so that doesn't narrow your choice much. It all comes down to price and features and what you want to do with it. Perhaps you should ask for advice at a local computer shop or two.

Good luck.

This mobo has a PCI-X 16X slot so any computer shop has good video cards from about
$95 up but would suggest if you are on a tight budget an 8600GT gives good value for money and will run most games at good frame rates. The monitor should have come with a DVI cable so all you have to do is plug in the card and start up the computer. Cancell new hardware wizard and when the computer finishes booting insert the driver cd that comes with the video card and install the drivers. Is a simple process to follow and will make a massive difference to your computing life and run much better games than the onboard video you are now using.
