Is there any way to unpack an ISO file on the hard disk?

Monday, 02 November, 2009

OLD QUESTION

Are there any programs that can decode an .ISO file? I don't have a burner and I cannot figure out how to decode an .ISO file. I want to be able to run the programs inside the .ISO file

(Originally posted August 2002).

Mitch Clarke, Wingham, NSW

The only solution is to burn the ISO file to a CD using Nero or Easy CD Creator, on a mate's PC -- then you can copy off the CD whatever you want.

There are some utilities for looking inside an ISO file but none I know of to extract the files back to the hard drive.

Do any readers know of a method?

There is a simple tool called Daemon tools lite http://www.daemon-tools.cc/eng/downloads this will create a virtual cd/dvd/blue ray drive on your computer that will run the ISO as if it had been burnt to a disc

Just thinking/wondering what Mitch is planning to do with this ISO file?
Is he trying to 'slip-stream' a OS Installation CD....with an 'update/patch'?
Or, is he trying to smart, hoping to use this ISO file.......to make 'pirated' copies?
With no burner, how can he do that?
Same goes for 'reverse engineering'....which is an absolute 'no-no'.

WinRAR and WinISO would do the job.

Hi there,
Nero has a program called ImageDrive which lets you mount your cd iso on to a virtual CD ROM drive.

Win Image 5
I don't know whether there's a later version or not, as this was given to me by a friend about 3/4 years ago, and I still use it occasionally if I need to extract an iso file into a directory on the hard drive so I can burn a full cd with stuff, rather than a small iso file, which might only take up 20-50Mb or so.
It's only about 700kb as well, which is even better if you can find it, as it's only a small download.

Isobuster
There is one called Isobuster which lets you browse through ISO files and also extract them to the hard drive. It's a handy program it saves CD space, but it would be much better to actually have a copy of the actual CD just in case you lose the ISO or it becomes corrupt.
