Why does my ADSL drop out?

Saturday, 27 February, 2010

OLD QUESTION

I've recently installed ADSL on my computer.

We've got two phone lines, I've attached the filter/splitter that came with the modem to the phone downstairs, as there was a significant noise increase since we've connected to ADSL. For the one upstairs, where we're sharing the phone line with the phone and the ADSL modem, there was no apparent noise, so I didn't go out and get another filter/splitter.

The thing is the ADSL connection keeps dropping out, and I've noticed that it seems to drop out when a phone call is answered on the phone that shares the line with the ADSL Modem. Do I need one of those dual filter/splitter thingies -- one for the phone and the other for the ADSL modem? Or is the problem something else?

I'm a bit confused about your description of what's happening, so probably the best thing is to go back to basics.
  • When people talk about a phone "line" they mean a separate phone service. If someone dials 1234 5678 and one of your phones rings, that's a phone line. It may still have multiple devices (such as phones) connected to it (and they'll all ring together). If you have another phone service coming into the house (say 1234 5679) then that's a second line. In other words, two people in the house can make two separate calls at the same time. And of course, good old Telstra will charge you two lots of line rental each month. (Don't get this confused with Duet or Selective Ring services, where you CAN have two numbers on the one line, but only one works at a time).
  • ADSL is added as a service on a normal phone line. In the example above, you would have to choose ONE of those lines for ADSL and it would ONLY be available on that line.
  • When you have ADSL added to a phone line, the line continues to work as a "phone" line, but ...
  • On a phone line that has ADSL, you have to have a filter in the line BEFORE everything that isn't an ADSL modem. If you have any devices connected BEFORE the filter, you may get all sorts of problems, including dropouts (but probably not so bad as to get a big Telstra man knocking on your door and asking what's going on.) The dropout probably occurs because when the phone is used, it effectively shorts out the high frequency ADSL signal -- that's what the filter is for. Think of it as an isolator.

So, it you have two phone extensions in your house (connected to the same line) the you either have to get a filter fitted before the line splits off to the two sockets, or fit a separate filter on both extensions. The second option is probably the easier one. Just remember that the ADSL modem has to connect BEFORE the filter or you get no ADSL.

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
An 'after-thought'.
Also, double-check............the SET-UP of the ADSL modem.

Is the LAN (the Etherner Controller!)set up correctly". (Yes or No!)
Has this been "ENABLED"...in the BIOS? (Yes or No!)
Has the 'drivers' (for this) been installed? (Yes or No!)

If NO (here), then WHY NOT?
(Without the LAN/Ethernet Controller ENABLED, w/ drivers installed.........your MODEM won't work too well, now, will it?)
Does it have EVERYTHING properly entered?
Your e-mail address?
Your Password?
Have you followed ALL the 'prompts'....correctly, in setting up your modem?
(If you're still having problems...with your modem, this could be another source..... of your problem.)
You need to, again ........double-check 'HOW'....you are setting your modem up.
(If you ARE running the modem.....through the LAN/Ethernet Controller 'set-up'!......this is WHAT you select! Not the OTHER option!)

Even when you are satisfied...that you have got it RIGHT.........double-check EVERYTHING, again!.......to see that you have got it right!

(Do all that 'double-checking'....with everything you do on a computer, and, you are definitely developing very good computer-skills. Sounds very tedious, and utterly boring, yeah, I know, BUT, after awhile, you won't even notice yourself doing it.......because it has become such a 'habit'!.....you're not even thinking of doing it when you do it.)
And, to me, that is........having very good computer-skills.
It's your choice, either you treat your computer like a piece of crap (and have all the trouble in the world with it!).........or you do everything you can to make it smoother and more effeciently.
Can you guess 'how' my computer does work?

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
This is a very simple question to ask....
"How many Phones, this does include the cordless type, are your house?"
The MAX, is........3!
Okay.
Every one of them........has to have an ADSL filter attached (in- line)....to the cable.
Most filters already have a small cable (correctly) atached.
Remove the 'existing' phone cable....from the wall-socket, and REPLACE with ADSL filter.
Now, RECONNECT the phone cable..........into the filter's socket clearly marked "ADSL".
If you're setting up your modem, once the progress you have made so far..........CONNECT the loose end of cable.......to the "PHONE" socket, of your modem.
Your pre-existing phones should be already properly hooked-up (w/ the filter in-line) and should not cause any problem.
You have done the modem......and, you're still having trouble?
Are the filters/cables firmly connected? (Yes or No?)
Are all the bars (within these sockets, and cables) properly aligned....straight, in other words)? (Again, Yes or NO?)

A 'word of caution', here......even a brand-new Filter (or cable!).......CAN be faulty! From the LACK of proper QUALITY CONTROL!
So, it always pays......to double-check EVERYTHING.....to make certain .....that everything is OK.

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
my stupid dsl-g640t wireless adsl+2 router keeps bloody cutting out, and ive tried everything such as a firmware update, tech guys checking the cables etc, and it still keeps dropping out! does ayone have a solution to fix this annoying problem once and for all?

(Disconnect ALL phones in the house and see if that fixes it. If so, your problem is with your ADSL filters or lack thereof. -PZ)

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
The phone uses bandwith of 1-10Hz as does a Dialup modem. ADSL uses bandwith from 13-100Hz. Telstra states it's needed to fit a line filter for each telephone to inssure the bandwith 1-10Hz.

Hope that helps you understand a little more

(Your figures are out a little Allan. A normal telephone voice circuit runs from around 300 Hz up to around 3 kHz and ADSL uses as much as possible above that, with a suitable gap in between -- even above 1 MHz if the line is up to it. -Paul Zucker)

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
I still think you should get a better Filter for that :P

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
hi
i install adsl in customer premises for a living.you must have every piece of eqpt eg phones , faxes eftpos monitored alarms filtered for the adsl to remain in sync.in the case of alarms a central fiter must be installed by a licensed communications cabler.
