What should we get for Christmas?

Sunday, 15 November, 2009

OLDER QUESTION

A couple of years ago we started getting just one good Christmas present for our whole family (Mum, Dad and three teenagers).

This year we've decided to get something techno, but can't think what. I'm hoping that HelpStation readers can give us some suggestions. We already have computers, plasma TV, sound systems, Pay TV and an electronic bug zapper.

You might have opened a can of proverdials Emma.

First, since you haven't given us a budget, I guess that opens it up a lot. I'll suggest a few things then we'll throw it open.
  • A games console for your plasma screen
  • A robot vacuum cleaner (for you, anyway)
  • A well for a village in a developing country
  • VoIP phone(s) for the household
  • In-car navigation systen
  • Media centre PC
  • The latest video camera or digital camera
  • Your own family web address with email accounts for all
  • A donation to a hospital or medical research centre

Over to you readers. What would you suggest?

re: What should we get for Christmas?
Well, my suggestion is if you already have all the techno gadgets it is time to get away from it all and take a holiday or go camping without any of the gadgets including mobile phones and see how you go. You might even enjoy it as i still do as it de stresses the mind, and theres nothing better than smelling bacon and eggs and a brew on a early morning camp fire next to a serene creek or river without the stupid ring tones or beeps of handheld devices.

The reason i say this is because we are all becoming slaves to the machine, and the more of these gadgets we have the less time we have for ourselves and our children. The otherside of this problem is that society seems to be turning into couch potatos getting slovenly and growing obese, so think seriously about it and get a life.

So much for all these devices giving us more time, because all we seem to do is to try and cramb more in a 8 or 12 hour day and for some people it seems 24/7.

I could go on but i wont as this may offend some people out there, but then the truth always does.

(Just be careful of the local lizards up there in Darwin Frank. I hear they're over 2m long and have very sharp teeth. Luckily the buffalo chase them out of the tenmt. -PZ)

How about a Nintendo Wii. You can have fun with the whole family over the Christmas break. (I am probably going to buy one in the January sales after I get some cash/vouchers over Christmas).

(Then you can play Little Piggy, and go "Wii Wii Wii" all the way home. -PZ)

Thish is only my opinion mind you and you may (hic) not agree with me.
But I always thought that a carton (12 bottles) of good Scotch was a really good present for the whole family.Dad can have it "on the rocks" Mum can drink it with various fruit salad thingies and the kiddies can try different cocktails as practice for when they become adults.

PS:) The little electronic "cane toad" I got last year works really good as a guard dog.

If anyone is interested in buying animals, etc for a village in
Africa, see the worldvision site www.worldvision.com.au. This feels much better than buying presents for people who don't NEED them.

Going for the personalised touch for each family member as suggessted by someone else - why not buy the kids gift vouchers for the internet sites that they puchase off, these could include music download sites and the like. (I heard a joke on the Jay Leno show last night. He said they've just released a gift voucher in the US that can be used in any store. "Isn't that called cash?" he asked. -Paul Zucker)

Thanks. Have have left nothing to chance and ordered my pressies from Umart last night. My Pentium D 925 and a ViewSonic Vx922 19" LCD monitor (as per top buy from the July 06 PC User). And since you generally have a week for returns and exchanges............I guess I better open them straight away! Cheers.........Allan

This is not really techo but what about Pop Art Portraits of your family members... you submit photos of them to this website and they change them into artworks and print them on canvas... they look really funky up on the wall side-by-side. I got them done of my partner and I and he loves them!

re: What should we get for Christmas?
Hmmmmmmmmm............if you don't know what you want you should probably be content with what you have. Buying a goat or digging a well for some village in Africa is the way to go. As for me I could give you a list of items just like that (clicking my fingers at that moment in time).............Dear Santa, I want an Intel 925 cpu to replace my celeron which I bunged in that $69 Gibabyte board to replace the other board I had that had the 524 cpu that I gave to one of my sons that replaced the Celeron etc. Have a happy and holy one folks!....Cheers....allan

(Hope you get a nice pressie Allan. -PZ)

Being a bit more altruistic - last year our daughter bought us a goat. It was a donation to a charity that bought animals for third world countries. I just hope it really did buy a goat.

What a sexist comment I feel bad for you Paul.

How about you take your husband on a nice holiday. Stuff the kids they already have computers, plasma TV, sound systems, Pay TV and an electronic bug zapper

re: What should we get for Christmas?
That tradition is ridiculous and gifts should have an individual touch... buy something for each of your kids and some good thing for you and your partner. Gift ideas for the teens could be magazine subscriptions, new furniture for their rooms, mp3 - although technology is a gift that makes you happy for a very short time only

re: What should we get for Christmas?
Actually, Emma, I liked the suggestions from Paul Zucker about the well in the village or the donation for medical research. If you have the money, and all that tech stuff already, can't you find it in your hearts to share some Christmas joy with others - where you get no return other than knowing you have done a good thing?

re: What should we get for Christmas?
You forgot the front door video-com & automatic latch lock.
This way the family can see the mormans visiting!

Seriously though Emma,

* Front entrance video intercom
* An Alarm system to protect those wonderfull items
* A Karioke machine

Cheers,
