Why can't I repair IE6 on XP Pro?

Wednesday, 08 October, 2003

I'm using Windows XP Pro and have all the Windows updates.

Recently I tried to repair IE6 and couldn't find a mention of either IE6 or Outlook Express 6 in Add/Remove programs or Windows Components.

What has happened to them?

John Harper, Grovedale, VIC

In Windows XP, IE is installed/uninstalled from the Add/Remove Programs window.
  1. Open Control Panel, then choose the Add/Remove Programs icon. This opens the Add/Remove Programs window.
  2. Choose the Add/Remove Windows Components button, the third button down on the left side.
  3. The Windows Components Wizard opens. Internet Explorer should be the fourth line down. Un-tick the box on this line to uninstall IE, then click on OK to accept the change.
  4. To reinstall IE, tick the IE box in the Windows Components Wizard.

If this won't work for you John, please get back in touch below and we'll see what's happening.

IE6 url error
When I start IE6 in the url is a long string of charactors that does not mean anything. I have gone into internet tools to change the home page address to something useful, but each time I start IE6 it goes back to the string of charators again.
for example:

http://%68%6F%6D%65%70%61%67%65%2E%63%6F%6D and so on.

re: Why can't I repair IE6 on XP Pro?
After installing IE6 SP1, IE6 disappeared from the listing of installed programs in Add/Remove Programs on my W2000k.

Seems that's the way it goes if SP4 is installed on W2000K.

A suggestion I've had is to uninstall SP3, when IE Repair becomes available. I haven't tried it yet; I'll wait for the next IE SP to surface.
