Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?

Sunday, 07 March, 2010

OLD QUESTION

Hi, I've got a Japanese Playstation 2. I was wondering if I can connect it to my computer and use its DVD so I don't have to buy a DVD-ROM for my computer? Would I be able to do that and be able to use the applications from a DVD from another magazine I bought?

Also, are there really servers on the Internet, where I can challenge other players with my PS2?

Thanks.

Sorry dude,

You can't plug your PS2 into your PC because that would defeat the whole purpose of a stand-alone console and Sony would lose lots of money.

The PS2's multiplayer capabilities are still yet to be implemented and there may be a hardware upgrade available later in 2002.

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
As far as I know, a USB patch cable is the only way to connect them. However, when they ARE connected, they do not recognize each other. The only noticeable change is that the PS2 will not turn on when it's connected in this manner. (Tested with a PS2 slim.)

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
(NOT A SERIOUS ANSWER. DO NOT BELIEVE THIS. -PZ)

Yes, you can by cutting half of the modem wire connecting the modem to pc and cutting half of the USB wire. Then bairing their ends so that their ends can be seen. Then join the ends by using a cello tape.Dont use any quick fix.Now just connect the modem end to the end of your ps2 and connect the USB end to your pc.Then switch on the ps2.Your pc will detect your ps2.Now put a dvd in the ps2.Then just rock.I tested it on my ps2 and it really worked

I gave up on the idea of connecting my PS2 to my laptop. I paid US$480 & bought a Joytech 8" LCD TFT screen which screws into the back of the PS2. Totally mobile and brilliant graphics - even has stereo sound with headjack! Expensive but neat, light and portable.

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
If you have your PC on wireless then run a network cable from the unused port in the back of the PC to the PS2, it nearly worked for me, but my computer is VERY old so you might have more luck. Also to connect PS2 to monitor (if you don't have TV for example) you will need a recent graphics card, such as Pinnacle PCTVrave (about 30 squid) and plug the three phonos (Red, Yellow & White) from the standard PS2 cable into the PC. I hope that helped if not then...oh. okidokes

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
If this post has been going on for 5 years doesn't that prove that there's a market out there for some electronic "genius" to make and market a device that allows you to hook up your Playstation to either your PC or Laptop monitor & use it as a screen for the PS? I travel extensively, always with a laptop, & would welcome such a device so I could take my PS as well. TV's are not always available.

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
Ignore 'hijanith,' he's obviously some kind of idiot.

The 'only' way to do it without a modded console (which may very well involve connecting your computer to your PS2 as part of the modding process, though it's unlikely) is to connect it to the internet as you would any other wired computer: plug in an ethernet cable, and plug the other end into a router, switch, or modem. Of course, there are a number of other ways to cover it; you could use a crossover cable to connect it to a computer, for example, and then use a 'bridged' connection (two connections merged into one, each of which passes acquired data along as though it were a wire. It's a software thing) to 'feed' the incoming data to the PS2, and to 'carry away' the data the PS2 sends.

Of course, you need either a PS2 ethernet card or whatever the hell it's called now, which is probably out of production--or, you can use a 'slimline' PS2, which has a built-in one.

As for USB, I hear it's popular to do so, but I've observed that (obviously) you need a male to male USB cable. That is, one with two normal sized ends that can go into the PS2 and computer USB ports at the same time and transfer data that way.

Unfortunately, I do not believe that you can connect via a firewire (1394, as it's sometimes called--incorrectly) 4-pin cable, nor a 6-pin, 9-pin or any other pin number. Tried it, PS2 wasn't recognized. Of course, I'm running Vista, so you can expect a few oddities to crop up here and there.

Oh, also, I necroed your topic for you, have fun. It has now been up for six (6) years and counting, folks.

I want to Connect my Playstation 2 To my PC
THis is order to extract the save game files on the save card in order to adjust them a bit. Mainly, so i can cheat and add the items I cant get otherwise in Games that i play, then I want to be able to resave them to the Save card for using in the game.

Is there a way to Do this? Ive hooked the system in using my USB ports. I just dont know where to go from here. Can someone give me more information

i've noticed that many of you have been refering to a phone line its not its a ethernet cable and you don't need ps2 modem with the newer ps2's like 70002 and 70003 models which are slimline all you need to know is YOU NEED BROADBAND or ADSL
for this to work for internet play!!!!!

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
Actually you can if you use the usb ports in the back. Get a connector for it then you attach the usb cord to your main usb port on your computer or laptop, if you have a vista then you can have it search for programming for it took me 10mins. Then turn on and should be ready to work, Your Welcome and all of you who said you can't your idiots only work with the modern ps2. Thank you! you basically can connect anything to a computer if its modern and have ports same with vhs/dvd/game systems. Joelcribwiki@yahoo.com

Ofcourse you can connect a PS2 to a pc, it depends on what your expectations are though,

you can get the screen of the ps2 on your pc screen using a vga - Video convertor (cost about 50 euros)
or get it in windows using a tv tuner card,

in which the second is not prefered because of bad image quality.

NONONONONONO!!!! You can't use your PS2 DVD-ROM on your PC!!! You CAN VIEW DVDs on your PC screen, for those who wanted to know. But that is NOT what he's asking! He wants to know if you can use the drive from the PS2 as a drive (like the C Drive on a normal PC), not just a player, on the computer. So there!!! Same as what Helpstation says!! Why? Because SONY are very greedy and want your money!!

yes of course you can connect ps2 to ur pc. just need to have a tv tuner card. but only thing is you wont get a hi rez on a pc since the pixel size is far smaller than the ones in tv.So since u have same rez and signal quality burstin out of ur PS2 console, games will look nasty when seen very close from monitor, obvious they look very fine on tv but thats one compromise u have to make .

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
right i tryed to connect my ps2 last night. I got windows xp media center edition. Ive also got a tv card and a whole lot fancy ports. Right so i was setting up my tv signal and decided to say that i was receiving my signal via satellite, so i connected my PS2's yellow cable into the computer and i was able to view the game that i wanted to play. But thats it, i wasnt able to play the game but i was able to see the game. SO i reckon with a bit more tweaking the night i might get my PS2 connected up to my pc. I will let you guys know and will provide a tutorial if i get it to work.

READ THE BLIDDY QUOSTION!
"Hi, I've got a Japanese Playstation 2. I was wondering if I can connect it to my computer and use its DVD so I don't have to buy a DVD-ROM for my computer? Would I be able to do that and be able to use the applications from a DVD from another magazine I bought?

Also, are there really servers on the Internet, where I can challenge other players with my PS2?"

Argh! This post topic is starting to drive me insane! READ THE QUESTION PEOPLE!!!!!!!

HE DOESN'T WANT TO WATCH OR EVEN RECORD THE GAMES HE IS PLAYING, HE WANTS TO CONNECT IT TO THE NET OR ELSE READ THE APPLICATIONS OFF THE COVER DVD OF ANOTHER MAGAZINE........!!!!!

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
Listen to this! Yes you can connect your playststion 2 with PC, but you may need a TV capture Card or some kind of program that can play or reproduce picture from VIDEO PLAYERS or RECORDERS.Then connect your Video to PC and simply connect playstation to video!

And that's that maybe it is little complicated but that is the way!!

(I'm the expert)

PCUSER you made a mistake, you were meant to say he's the idiot... HK Romeo wants to extract data not watch a movie. Everyone knows you can hook it up those ways but it still doesn't get you the programs of the DVD..

However, now that it's almost two years after the original post, I would recommend getting a DVD burner for your PC.. as shown in the PCUSER magazine. About $AU165 now for a 4x. Or else, just the basic 52x24x52x12 CDRW/DVD is just $65 these days!

P.S.. I'm still waiting for somekinda comment from someone famous at PCUSER :P

Why
Why would you want to connect it to your computer when DVD roms are only about $50.... Sounds like a much smarter idea and you will have a lot more versatility.

Yes, but it's hard.

Yes its possible
Yes, you are able to connect a playstation 2 through a computer, through a tv tuner card/tv tuner card.

NeonfOxPosted: 28/10/2003

People read his problem
just to all these people did you even read what his asking.... his not tryiong to watch dvds from his ps2 on his computer... he wanted to know if you can use it as a DVD-ROM, eg read programs, not movies, and the answer is..... a big fat NOT you can't....

but how ever you can connect the ps2 up to your computer, refer to ps2dev.org, as you can program and run you programs on ps2, also transfer your memcard images to pc for a larger storage space

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
Yes you can connect your PS2 to the computer. I'm not sure if the DVD player will work, but you can order a thing called X-PORT to connect your PS2 to the internet. You can trade personal parks from Tony Hawks Pro Skater Four and trade teams for Pro Evoloution Soccer 2. Thanks for reading.
John DoePosted: 22/09/2003

Of Course!
Actually, you can. But you can't do it yourself, and instead of some PS2 on your computer desk you'll have to have this big chunk of wires and everything. It works like this: You can got to any computer store and they will most likely have a AV>USB adaptor which you can use, however you will need to open up your PS2 (get a licensed technician [licensed by OAP America / OAP Australia] to do this) and flick a switch (which changes the type of output, the technician will know which one) then normally plug up all the wires of your PS2 only using the adaptor, turn on the computer and PS2 normally and on Windows, a new hardware found screen will appear, the computer will think it is a Sony CD/DVD combo drive and you will be able to use the PS2 as a DVD/CD player. Of course it will automatically open Windows DVD player and show you what a PS2 screen on your tv would look like.

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
Sorry mate,

You can't connect a PS2 to your PC because there isn't any technology out yet that can let you connect them. Although technology for the PS2 and PC should be updated later this year.

hey, you can connect your pc to a ps2. I currnetly have my ps2 hooked up thru a tv tuner card. Although this works there seems to be some lag for some reason...?

yes you can just buy a tv card then connect it
Daniel SmithPosted: 27/07/2003

Here is the answer:
Just get an emulator off the net, and run it on your computer and get a usb 2 ps2 controller adapter..

Saying that you need a beast of a computer, with a good video card (ATI Radeon 9800 pro) ; )

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
You can actually run Linux on a PS2, but it does require a fairly expensive kit containing a HDD, network adapter and the Linux software itself. But with Linux running you should be able to share the DVD of the PS2 with any other computer on the network.

I doubt though that this would be worth the time and expense as compared to just buying a DVD player for your PC.
MarioXPosted: 25/04/2003

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
Obviously you can't connect your PS2 into PC. But you still can play PS2 on your PC. It's easy,
1. Get a Video Capture card
2. Connect AV cabble into your Video Card
3. Connect Stereo and Mono Cable into your soundcard ( obviously you need a special cable that connect Stereo and Mono Cable into your soundcard jack)
GusPosted: 10/04/2003

Use "UPnP" on Windows XP,ME to lease PS2 DVD out to PC
Theoritcally it can be done by either connecting the ilink/USB of PS2 to your firewire /USB card on your PC and enabling UPnP on XP or ME to discover new PNP devices it may find i.e. PS2 DVD ROM, you may then lease out the PS2 DVD to the Computer to use as a DVD Player. other ways to use Pnp devices would include Jini, Tini protocols which are protocols that detect PNP H/W leasing.
Haven't tested this theory out yet but itf WINXP detects PNP devices ie USB mouse, Wireless cards while the OS is running in thery it may be able to detect the PS2.good luck!
snippet1_evoPosted: 08/03/2003

As for the music thing
Just go out and get a couple of audio cables. RCA Stereo female plugs on one end-to plug into the ends of the PS2 cables, and a stereo 3.5mm plug on the other end-to plug into the line-in socket on the computer. Just use a wave recorder to record it.
BlairPosted: 08/01/2003

Here is a solution
Whats the point in doing that, you would probably end up paying more for the components needed to do it. Just go out and buy a dvd drive for about $99. They are really cheap now.
BradPosted: 06/12/2002

End the posts already!
lol..look at the original post date, and the current date. I think people should stop posting solutions here..And let it be closed. :) I think the person that posted would have enough info at this time (And may even be hooking up my espresso machine to his beastly Go go mobile)

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
why bother buying all the stuff to conect a ps2 to a computer to play dvds when you can spend $70 and get a good dvd rom for your pc
RobertPosted: 25/11/2002

Playstation 2 running linux..
There is an addon for the Playstation 2 (http://playstation2-linux.com/). This comes with:
* 40 GB Hard Disk
* Linux Distribution on DVDROM
* Keyboard and Mouse
This would allow you to completely hook up your playstation 2 to your computer, and buy using the ethernet that comes with playstation 2, you can share the DVDRom drive the playstation 2 has and then do as you wish. Though for playing movies and using software like Encarta that comes on DVDRoms would be useless... These wont detect it as the DVD and think you have tried to pirate it.

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
Hi there, on this same subject, I have a ps2 and want to know if i can connect it to my pc, I have Music2000 on ps and I want to save the song i created, to pc, so i can burn it to cd for personal use. Yeah sure I can go out a buy the PC version of the game, but I don't want to have 2 copies of the game and not only that, but I tried the demo of the game and I hate it, I much prefer it on ps! Anyone got a solution for this??
tomPosted: 24/11/2002

YES YOU CAN, (dont listen to the people that say you cant)
YES

yes u can connect your playstation to your computer, i would suggest getting a TV card as it would also allow you to watch TV on your computer. Another solution would be to get a Gforce 4 that has video in (VIVO) however the quality of this may be very minimal.

(The other way to connect your PS to your PC is with 12 inch nails. -Paul Zucker)
BradPosted: 16/11/2002

Take 2 - Action!
if you really wanna hook it up, do it virtually? Using an emulator and your current game discs. youre gonna want a machine with a lotta juice to do this.
DavePosted: 05/11/2002

Why Bother?
Playstation 2 games are not a shade on quality to XBox & nowhere near PC quality & versitility as for DVD play back it's enough hassle to find softwere for DVD rom let alone a PS. If You want Blue screens from hell go for it. PC the best allround entertainment centre why add crap!
BradPosted: 28/10/2002

Yes
It can be done. You will spend more money than you probably want to spend or even have - youre obviously not into modding, if you were you wouldnt post your message in the first place. The best solution is to buy a DVD drive and add it to your computer. If you still refuse to do this and you prefer being a tinkerer - save up your dough, and have a modder do it. if you want to risk doing it yourself and hacking at your computer case, and using your high and mighty electronics knowledge....by all means go for it. my biff is, I have super funked up DVD drive in my computer - funny thing is....Its an ornament most of the time. I paid $120 for it to just look good. Ive used it about 8 times (as dvd drive with dvd discs) but hey its all good. Scuse me while I go hook up the espresso machine to my car.

Im not sure wether you can use it as a dvd player or not sorry.

What is the point?!!!!!!

It is very expensive and you may as well buy a dvdrom!
oraclePosted: 21/09/2002

Want another alternative?
I like everybody's theories and schemes, and they all have their advantages and disadvantages, but did you all know that....

Playstation are actually selling a bundle package that converts a PS2 into a PC?

Yes, so you can have a PC with a DVD player, you can surf the net etc. And you can also network this PS2 computer to another computer.

Imagine playing DOOM on the PS2 against PC players ;-)

Anyways, that some food for thought
nishanth sooriyapavaPosted: 09/09/2002

in theory
i think its well and truly possible. surely there are some underground chip vendors out there that make mod chips that override the dvd region lock. and then there are probably vendors making a chip to overcome any kind of encryption or whatever that sony employs to prevent proper integration with pc's.

in theory, of course.

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
I'm basing this on my experiences with an N64, so forgive me if I'm wrong...

If you wanted to connect your PS2 to your PC just so that you could see the pictures on the screen and hear the sound (such as watching a DVD) then you could use a TV tuner card.

These cards allow you to connect RF (antenna) and AV (separate video and sound) leads to your PC. YOu may have to plug the sound leads from your PS2 into an amplifier or soundcard if the TV tuner card doesn't have the required inputs.

Ask at your local computer shop for a TV tuner card or have a look at http://www.lifeview.com/

If your PS2 is a Japanese version then you'll need to make sure that the TV tuner card can handle NTSC signals and I'm not sure if you'll be able to play Australian bought (region 4) DVDs.
MavPosted: 16/08/2002

WHY??????
I cant understand WHY anyone would go to so much trouble to connect a PS2 to a pc when all you're really doing is using the pc as a tv???
If you're doing so you can use the DVD,
For the small cost of about $80 for a DVD for your pc "WHY BOTHER"
just my little bit ;-)

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
In order to connect a PS2 to a comp requires mental strength. You have to use your brain.
IanPosted: 01/08/2002

Yes.
Yes you can. I read in a review of the PS2 that you connect it either the USBs it has i think or if its got one the ethernet plug.
The Microsoft X box has this ethernet plug in the back for multiplay, im sure you could work out something

PatPosted: 04/07/2002

A load of crap!
Don't listen to that crap!
You can connect your PS2 into it.
Simply buy a New Graphics card with Video/Audio RCA in out and you will be on your way for a new improved Sony Computer
However price of those Graphics cards range from 500 to 1500.
To tell you the truth i would buy The DVD ROM drive that is non recordable to decode DVD's to VCD's then burn with a separate Burner.
Good luck!

(Just in case readers are confused, of course you can use you PC as a really low-class TV and output a game-console into the PC to display the output -- but WHY??????

The original question was about properly integrating the PC and Playstation 2. --HelpStation)
Peter ChallisPosted: 23/05/2002

Connect them this way
Yes you can. I play PS2 games through my computer using a studio PCTV card manufactured by Pinnacle Systems. Connect the yellow video cable PS2 to video input on PCTV card and white PS2 cable to soundcard on PC.

Truly awesome feeling and gameplay using the above, combined with Thrustmaster force feedback wheel.Highly recommended.

(Yes, but surely this is just using the PC as a TV? -HelpStation)

re: Can I connect a Playstation 2 to my PC?
Dick Smith Electronics used to sell a TV tuner capture card for a PC. It is called Spirit TV/Video capture card. I bought one. I can plug my Xbox into it. I watch DVD's, play games then there's this program I've heard about which you can use to boost the graphics if your processor and graphics cards are powerful enough. To read about the card and where you may be able to get one go to http://www.spiritmodems.com.au/support/documents/tvtopr.htm.
Hope this helped.
