OLDER QUESTION

Please give us a name of who invented the personal computer. I need to right the persons name that at least helped build the first one it is a homework assighnment. Ineed a name!!! Please help!

(Originally posted September 2004)

Sarah , Australia,

There's no one person Sarah. I can't even tell you what the first PC was because it's impossible to point to any particular thing and say that it was the first. For instance, when did the minicomputer become a personal computer. the IBM PC was the first of the family that we call the PC today, but there were many other personal computers before and after that. And if a hobbyist built one just for himself, does that count? You need to explain in your assignment that it was a gradual process.

Your best bet is to do some web searching. And even then, you'll only get someone's opinion. Try these.

Sensis

Google

Yahoo

But remember that these are specific searches. You should experiment with different words and phrases.

If you insist on a "one stop" answer to your question, try this Wikipedia entry.

(And check the meanings of the words "right" and "write" in your dictionary please Sarah.)

Paul, re-instating this subject caused me to Google "Chuck Peddle". At the address "http//:www,commodore.ca/history/people/chuck_peddle/chuck_peddle.htm" you shall find a pretty good history of this guy's input to the PC. Although many people had an input to the developement of the PC this chap not only developed the CPU but also assembled the first Personal Computer that sold in quantity - the Commodore PET.

I have still got my money on him 'straight-out', followed by Apple II & Shack Radio with in months.

(Thanks Milton. -PZ)

re: Who invented the Personal Computer
In all probability it was not one person but a team and probably a military one at that.
The first electronic computer way back in about 1945 designed as such was the ENIAC,Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer, was made for calculating the trajectory, elevation, traverse, relative motions and fall of shot for battleships and took up a fair space. Natural progression would shrink the volume until we have a reasonable size and production would reduce the cost until we could afford a 'personal' computer.

There were electro mechanical calculators long before this. one ran at Bletchley Park, UK, prior to 1945 and there were many mechanical only variants even earlier than this.
I think PZ could verify some of this, I hear the original eniac was part of his masters degree in uni?

re: Who invented the Personal Computer
I say I invented the computer. I made my own computer out of some sticks. I then taped them togethere and numbered them off from 1,2,3 and so on. So I apparently had a great contribution to the creation of the computer. No I'm kidding but there really was no one that made a computer just a whole bunch of people helped. But I'd would say Konrad Zuse.He made the first programmable computer

re: Who invented the Personal Computer
No one 'invented' the computer it was more of a gradual process and if you want to get technical the first computer was an abacus still no one in particuler invented the computer more as everyone had a hand it to what the computer is to today.

(Or the first computer was a pile of counting stones on the ground. -PZ)

re: Who invented the Personal Computer
You would have to consider the Question "who Invented the personal computer" in this light ... the PC does not only mean IBM PC Clone AT ALL.. it means personal computer .. and if you want the man who developed personal computers that were sold on mass to the public and started the revolution .. only one man can be singled out ,,.. Stephen Walzak or Walz as he is commonly known as .. he was never the driving force behind the development of the company that put personal computing before the masses .. his business partner and friend Steven Jobs was .. jobs was not technical as Walz was .. but Walz could redesign circuits and made what was a large and expensive machine into the first kits that were put together in a garage and from that the the first PC company sprang.. which stirred the IBM corp into action and brought about the business relationship between IBM and Microsoft. .. long storey from there ... but I'd ignore any production before the apple machines as expensive cumbersome attempts at a PC .. they were never mass produced and were rarely easy to use .. the apple 2 series took that claim and were the first machines to reach a production number of one million.

re: Who invented the Personal Computer
John Atanasov (his name was changed to Atanasoff) is the inventor of the computer. Bulgarian kids learn that in school. See http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blatanasoff_berry.htm
Technical Explanation of The ABC Computer
The A-B Computer used dynamic storage for its main memory, requiring periodic "refresh" to remind if of its binary state, as do today's dynamic RAM chips. Atanasoff considered using relays, magnetic core memory, vacuum tubes, and charged capacitors to store each bit of memory; he finally decided on the latter, on the basis of the cost/performance.

Atanasoff-Berry Computer Replica
The Atanasoff-Berry Computer was the first electronic digital computer. The original ABC was dismantled decades ago. Ames Laboratory, using private funding, is building a working replica of this historically important invention.

Court Case
The 1946, ENIAC Computer was long thought to have been the first electronic computer and the inventors, J. Presper Eckert and John W. Mauchly were the first to patent a digital computing device - - but a 1973, patent infringement case (Sperry Rand Vs. Honeywell), voided the ENIAC patent as a derivative of Atanasoff's invention.

re: Who invented the Personal Computer
Try a google at "Fairchild Intel association". There is a bit of interesting reading there on the early developement of the Interrgrated Circuit and the first Microprocessor at Fairchild and Intel respectively.

However a course of 24 booklets sold at the newsagent around 1990 gives a pretty fair cover of computing from year dot to 1990. "The Home Computer Course".

I'll put my money on Chuck Peddle, he worked on the 8600 Microprocessor for Motorola. Then on the 6502 for MOS Technology, which was bought out by Jack Tramiel of Commodore and Chuck then produced the first fully contained "Home Computer" the PET Commodore. This was followed shortly by the Apple II which also used the 6502 cpu.

Incidently Chuck and some guy Bill Gates tried to purchase Apple for $150,000 but the bank would not lend them any more than $100 G's. What a red face that B/Manager must have carried around for the last 28 years.

However IBM produced the first Personal Computer, before that they were known as Home Computers. I built a Australian Microbee in 1983 does that count?

(Hi Milton. Did you hear why they decided not to merger Fairchild and Honeywell? They decided that the new name sounded silly - FarewellHoneychild. -PZ)

re: Who invented the Personal Computer
There is an answer but it depends on what you define a PC.

Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace built the first COMPUTER

For pcs in the home...maybe the commodore 64 or the Tandy model 2...or apple 1 or maybe it was microsoft who poularized it into homes

if u define a what a pc is ill tell u

re: Who invented the Personal Computer
(1946)Most history books will tell you the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Intergrator and Computer)was the first true all purpose electronic computer whose principal creators were the late John Mauchly and J.Presper Eckert and they held the unchallenged title of inventors of the modern computer.
But then, looking back a bit further along comes an obscure physicist called John Atanasoff to dispute there claims as he as a teacher at the Iowa State College in the late 1930s and his student Clifford Bell began building a device that would allow them to solve large linear algebraic equations. Their machine was later called ABC, (Atanasoff Berry Computer) but as he was called away to the Navy in 1942 there were no patents filed in Iowa State and the ABC was left abandoned in a storeroom.
There is more to this story but its to much to get in to, so do a search on the above names and you will find.

(And for those who want to know their lost Hotmail Addresses, dont ask Paul, Me or anyone else as we dont carry crystal balls around, write them down in a log book and dont lose it or apply for another one or even try a small program called SIW systems information for windows which may find it for you, right Paul? lol).
Many regards to all, Frank.

Found this!

SMH IT section.
In a book titled iWoz published this week, Wozniak seeks to tell the engineer's side of the story and set a few things in the record straight.

For him, the day that defined the personal computer was June 29, 1975, the first time he typed a character on a keyboard and saw it show up on the screen right in front of him.

"Every computer before the 'Apple I' had that front panel of switches and lights. Every computer since has had a keyboard and a screen," he writes.

Having just re-read the answers to the initial question. Would it not be prudent to suggest the use of a spelling checker and/or dictionary before posting replies. Unfortunately grammar checking is still very ordinary, so we may need to forgive some of the grammatical errors in some of the replies. As to the inventor of the PC, I agree with Mr. Smith on the 10/09/2004, an article, or series, on the history of the PC in upcomming PCUser magazines, may be educating, and enlightening, to our younger readers.

I aggree a history lesson would be great. I also think to answer the question on the first computer it would have to have some sort of key board and a central processor and be running a monitor to display the first form of dos. An adding machine would not qualify as they are still available and not called a computer.

I think it might help as well if you check the Intel site www.intel.com - I would do a search for the invention of adding machines, I beleive they were the stepping stones towards the computer.
Also it wouldn't hurt to search for great technology inventions in the 20th centuary...just thoughts.
Good Luck!

re: Who invented the Personal Computer
Its a good question..
why?
what was the 1st PC...?
a Z80 or the IBM-PC?
what about the Apple?
I built a thing called a Cromenco (about the size of a sewing machine) in the mid 70's..
does that qualify?
Does a PC need DOS as an OS to qualify?
or does CPM make it too??
Does a PC need an application before it can be considered a PC? So does anything that ran Visicalc (like a TRS80) make the grade?

genl'men (or ladies) at PCUSER
maybe a history lesson is in order.....

cheers
