...but although its easy to get someones IP most people don't have any idea what to do after that. Most computers (or at least mine) have the LED on the circuit for the cam so that the cam cannot be on without the LED. The mic is a little different. If you are worried then:
a) cover the cam and mic
b) don't get naked when your computer is on/open c) use a proxy when on chat rooms hide/change your MAC address
d) keep computers out of the bedroom and have your talks in there
e) use firewalls and check for unknown software (but for goodness sake don't delete anything important..ie sys32)
f) have your computer ask you before it downloads OR installs anything
but really..are you THAT attractive/rich/amazing that someone with time and knowledge to hack will single you out to so? Are you famous/can they make money?

AND Lastly, if you cant do these things get a mac (the company does e and f for you + people don't make many viruses for mac- the company releases software for them within a few days + the LED is on the same circuit as the cam) if you are still worried get lessons in how to work a PC OR (even better) get and learn how to use linex (even harder to hack-because people who use linex protect themselves-or are the hackers- so viruses are usually not made for them)

question: I accesed the web sites of 2 newspapers and sometimes when I click on an article the blue led of the web cam opens alongside with the Live cam center (control panel of the web cam)! I have scaned the computer for any malicious software but it was ok. Any ideeas? Thank you!

Anything can be hacked given enough time and resource. You just have to read newspapers to see who has stolen what records from which banks and medical centres
Web cams: There was a nice demonstration a few years ago on national TV here in NZ where an IT Professional hacked a wireless laptop on air in about 5 minutes and took control of the whole machine including webcam.
Make sure you have Wake on Lan disabled and if you power the whole machine down it can't be hacked - until you power up of course.

According to the filings in Blake J Robbins v Lower Merion School District (PA) et al, the laptops issued to high-school students in the well-heeled Philly suburb have webcams that can be covertly activated by the schools' administrators, who have used this facility to spy on students and even their families. The issue came to light when the Robbins's child was disciplined for "improper behavior in his home" and the Vice Principal used a photo taken by the webcam as evidence. The suit is a class action, brought on behalf of all students issued with these machines.

If true, these allegations are about as creepy as they come. I don't know about you, but I often have the laptop in the room while I'm getting dressed, having private discussions with my family, and so on. The idea that a school district would not only spy on its students' clickstreams and emails (bad enough), but also use these machines as AV bugs is purely horrifying.

Schools are in an absolute panic about kids divulging too much online, worried about pedos and marketers and embarrassing photos that will haunt you when you run for office or apply for a job in 10 years. They tell kids to treat their personal details as though they were precious.

But when schools take that personal information, indiscriminately invading privacy (and, of course, punishing students who use proxies and other privacy tools to avoid official surveillance), they send a much more powerful message: your privacy is worthless and you shouldn't try to protect it.

its bloody hard to write a program to hack into a computer, let alone get around firewalls and antivirus software! Not to mention that people (aka police,etc.) are always on the lookout for that type of stuff. Its more believeable that you have a virus or that the software is out of date.

Just recently i went on my webcam and normally the light is red when i am off and green when i am on but recently it is the opposite, when i am on my webcam the picture is now blurry and the light is red and there were sounds coming through my speakers which weren't coming through from the other end. Well webcams can be hacked a lot easyer now days. Just make sure you have a good firewall like zonealarm and a good av like avast and a good anti spyware like super anti spyware.

(But this wont stop a good hacker from getting into your system!)

yes it can....if you do not wish this to happen go to system devices in the control panel under classic settings and disable it. I personally watched someone hack into a person's cam. I was NOT impressed. This person is a expert but it was displeasing to say the least.

Yes it can be hacked when your using yahoo messenger and using your webcam. The status of the viewing monitor becomes paused also status of 'statistics' option on the cam becomes 'Peer to Peer' which indicates another is viewing your cam. I experience this now and I am trying to investigate where this person is and how to stop others from viewing my cam while chatting with another who has the right to view my cam.

Well to be honest you webcam can be hacked but by the traditional method-(trust), A torjum can be implanted to your system utilities and identifies to your antivirus softwares in general as a non-threat utility, which in genral IS but suspected consumers with harmfull intensions can be moniterd by the use of the same utility when activated webcam. Such act is violation to genral consumer and public right but will our world be much safer if webcams are monitered it's up to those whom we trust with our security that we have to Fear. as for the introder u(the hacker)will defendatly need a V.high connection speed to acsess accurate infomation, but in the same manner the hakey has got an equivilent amount of speed of connection to become a victum.

The simple answer is, yes. Many people don't configure their cams properly, and you can actually tap
into them using Google. But even if it is configured properly, if a hacker installs a Trojan on your computer, they have as much control over it (or more control) than the person sitting at your keyboard. So a hacker who has installed a Trojan on your PC can in fact view your web cam just like you can.

As for looking through monitors, don't count on it. Sure, it's possible, but it would require extensive physical modification of your specific monitor. Probably not gonna happen unless your an enemy of the state.

Basic solution, unplug your camera when you're not using it, or point it at the wall. That's what I do! :)

I have experienced a number of times where my webcam software will run automatically during the middle of the night. Luckily my webcam has a lens cover on when I'm not using it, so any hacker hacking in cannot see anything. Be warned. Somebody is watching you!
