DVI monitor blanks

Saturday, 02 January, 2010

I just hooked up my LCD monitor with a DVI cable.

I used to use a VGA cable but changed and now my screen blanks out every few minutes.

Any idea why?

Have you connected the DVI cable to a DVI input on the monitor? (I only ask because it's possible to connect some computer DVI ports to a VGA socket via a suitable cable. In this case the video is still analog so I can't see any advantage over using the VGA port.

Assuming that you've connected the DVI port to a DVI input, let''s see.

When you say the screen blanks, does it look like it's a time-related thing or something that's related to what you''re running on the computer? It's possible that you're trying to use a graphics setting that's too high for the monitor (such as in a game) so the monitor is blanking because it can't handle the signal.

I assume that you still have the VGA output and cable, so why not find/borrow another VGA monitor and connect it as a second monitor. That will tell you if it's the computer or the DVI monitor that's blanking.

You could also check the screen saver / power saver settings to make sure there isn't a silly, short setting. I once saw a system that went blank and after a while the owner suddenly remembered that he had a "black screen-saver". DOH!

Try just running something simple such as a browser window and see if that holds up.

Good luck. Please let us know what it was Scott.
