How can I install Win 98 after XP?
Thursday, 13 November, 2003
I recent bought a new computer which has Windows XP Professional installed. (I previously had Windows 98se on my old system).
As much as I love the new interface and the structure of the operating system, I find that there are a lot of problems regarding the subject of gaming. I could play most of the recent games, but when I install older ones, I seem to have tons of problems starting them up.
I've upgraded everything I need - DirectX 9, nVidia drivers, Windows service pack, motherboard drivers, BIOS updates, and so on. I've also upgraded the full patch for all those games but they still don't seem to be well.
In the end, I've decided to ask the question on HelpStation because PC User has always been my favourite magazine (even though I didn't buy the current issue 'coz it doesn't have any good benchmark tests and "hardware buying guides" except for DVD's and stuff.)
Anyways, the question is:
How can i install a second operating system - Windows 98se on my current computer, which has XP Professional on the first partition (NTFS) of my HD, without touching any of my files on that partition?
(By the way, the other three partitions are FAT32's.)

Windows 98 really should be on the first partition, and should be installed before Windows XP. Microsoft's Knowledge base article 306559, " HOW TO: Create a Multiple-Boot System in Windows XP" describes the process. If you really insist on keeping your existing installation however, instead of doing the sensible thing by backing up and starting over again, here's a procedure that I've seen reported to work.
Start off by making sure the FAT32 partition you are going to use is set to 'Active'.
Copy the Windows 98 .cab files (contents of the \win98 directory of the CD) to \windows\options\cabs on the new partition.
Boot the computer with a Windows 98 boot disk, and install Windows 98 from that directory.
Then use your Windows XP CD and start installation by running 'Setup' from within Windows 98.
When you are prompted to reboot, reboot back into Windows 98 instead of into Windows XP setup.
Edit the Boot.ini file on the Fat32 partition from:
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup"
C:\="Microsoft Windows"
To:
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=15
Default=C:\
[Operating Systems]
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
You can delete the $win_nt$.~bt directory afterward.
I'm not sure about that procedure, and I don't really advise you to follow it. I haven't tried it myself, and wouldn't. It looks to me like there's been some steps omitted from the description to start with! I've simply provided it here for your information, because you asked. If you do try it and find it doesn't work, please don't complain, because I've warned you up front.
If backing up and starting over really is too much for you to confront, why not try this instead. Send us in a list of those games you're trying to get working (below). We may just be able to find ways to get them running under Windows XP. There's more than one way to skin a cat, as the old saying goes.
Here puss, puss, puss...

(1) how can i installed win98'before xp
(2) how can i use win98 to format an harddsik
(3) how can i use ghost in three hardisk
(4) what is the function of ghost JosephPosted: 07/06/2009 An answer. I am in a simular situation, exept that I had the dual boot working.
It can be done!
I reinstalled 98 to fix some bugs I created and tweak it from the ground up.
However, after a format and a success I found windows booting up in "Paging mode".
This ment the drivers were not loaded and I could not install any.
I disabled my Autoexec.Bat and Config.Sys after remming near every line out.
That did not work, so out of desperation I deleted every non-essential file on the root of C:, including BOOT.DOS.
XP tried to boot 98, but BOOT.DOS was missing so DOS could not load up.
Now I sit hear, typeing to you using XP (the original Os).
I found I site that answered my problem.
However my computer has no floopy drive and my usb drive are missing.
I need to find away to boot in pure dos and to get around with out my lost xp cd.
You might be not so unfortunate so here is my knowledge.
First let's get one thing
strat, Windows 95, 98, and ME are just an incarnation of "Windows for workgroups".
In other words, they are all "Ms-dos" programs that run their own programs.
Delete dos and see how far windows gets, M$ lied about half of the OS stuff.
The question is not how to insall Windows 98 but how to install "Ms-dos 7.1".
Boot up in dos using a floopy, cd (seach for barts bootable cds), or usb drive (search this too).
You must have Ms-dos 7.1 on you disk, so you can't create an XP or ME bootable disk.
You will need the SYS.COM(or exe) on it as well.
After you get in dos, type "sys a: c:", type "sys /?" for info on sys.
Once dos is installed you can use MSDOS.SYS to point to your windows installation and tweak the startup options.
Goto Www.MDGx.Com for info on tweaking MSDOS.SYS.
See, Xp only boots up dos witch is on C:, after that dos boots up Windows witch is on E: in the W98 folder.
You can install windows any were you want after this, even on drive C: if you name the windows folder something different from your XP folder (like W98, WIN98, WINDOW9, etc).
Using MSDOS.SYS or WINBOOT.INI you can boot as many installatins of 3.1, 95, 98, and ME as you want on the same partition.
Dir of C:
Windows (Xp home)
DOS (Ms-dos of your choice)
Win31
Win95
Win98
Win982
WinMe
Autoexec.Bat (Boot batch) file>
Autoexec.Dos (Alternitave DOS)
Config.Sys (Driver loader)
Config.DOS (Alternitave)
Msdos.sys
Msdos.dos
Msdos.ME1
Msdos.981
Msdos.982
Msdos.951
Io.sys
Io.dos
NTLDR (Windows XP!)
BOOT.INI (Menu and boot configeration)
BOOT.DOS (Points to IO.SYS)
Switchwin.Bat (Switches msdos.sys's)

I have done it before on several computers, the resulting dual boot system functions exactly as if you had installed 98 first it's really very easy and the above instructions are pretty good Marcel DoustPosted: 13/11/2003 re: How can I install Win 98 after XP? Here's something I prepared earlier:
While the best way is to install Win98 first then XP, it can be done the other way. First, you need FAT32. You can have your whole hard drive FAT32 to begin with, or you'll have to chop a bit off for a new partition (Partition Magic is good for this). Or you can just install to another drive. However, installing to the same partition as XP may not be a good idea, since win98 may overwrite some XP stuff (plus it may be a problem to configure the boot manager - see below). Do so at your own risk!
Anyway, first download a boot manager called Xosl (http://www.xosl.org) and unzip the files to your formatted FAT32 partition. Then boot your computer using a win98 boot disk or the win98 cd. Install as normal, and it'll reboot at some point. Make sure the computer boots off the hard drive, where it'll continue with win98 (don't worry, you haven't lost winXP). When it's all done, go into dos mode (either from shut down or F8 at start) and go to where you unzipped Xosl. Run the installl program, install to DOS area, yes yes yes, reboot. It will boot into Xosl, where you can add operating systems to the boot menu (selecting from partitions), configure shortcut keys, default options, and other fancy stuff (you may want to plug in a PS/2 or serial mouse for Xosl, at least until you configure shortcut keys).
That should do it, and you now have 2 operating systems! Works for me!
Mark AllenPosted: 13/11/2003 re: How can I install Win 98 after XP? Another alternative is to swap hard disks.
Install a hard disk cradle in your computer, and buy 2 drawers for your hard disks.
When you need XP, put that disk into your machine and when you want to play your Win98 games, turn the machine off, swap hard disks and keep the two operating systems separate.
It's not an elegant software solution, but it works, at the TAFE college were I work, they use this system to stop different computer classes from screwing up the files on the computers.
