What is an Ethernet controller?
Wednesday, 07 April, 2010
OLD QUESTION
I have a Dell Dimension 4600 with CD/DVD burner, Geforce FX5200, SB Audigy2, Canon scanner, Lexmark printer and a Winfast capture card.
After an operating system clean install, Device Manager now reports three devices with no drivers:
- Ethernet controller
- Multimedia audio controller
- SM bus controller.
No amount of searching can resolve this, not even Windows Internet search. I've found a possible solution to the SM bus, but not the other 2. Everything seems to be working, so what is an ethernet controller and why is it suddenly 'not installed' when I didn't know I had it in the first place?
Dell are no help. Can you?

Your search hasn’t resolved the problem simply because you’re looking in the wrong places, and using the wrong tools to search with. Microsoft and Windows won’t tell you how to set up your Dell Dimension, you need to get the stuff you need from Dell!
But first, let’s deal with that ‘Ethernet Controller’.
Has your motherboard got a rear connector for LAN? Local Area Networking, that is, and it’s where you connect a network cable to the system. The socket will be like a phone socket, only wider. The circuitry controlling that function will be your ‘Onboard LAN’ or ‘Onboard Networking’, or the socket itself may be on a ‘Network Card’ rather than being a rear panel connector.
That form of Networking is called ‘Ethernet’ and your controller is ‘not installed’ because you’ve neglected to prepare for the Operating System clean install by collecting the device drivers together for your system beforehand. Windows has some drivers ‘built-in’, but not all of them. There are other system components not installed also, and no doubt there are other system components which are currently using ‘generic’ Windows drivers rather than the correct ones supplied by the manufacturer.
A read through “ How do I prepare to reinstall the OS?” and “ How do I wipe the disk and install XP” will give a far more detailed discussion of the preparation and of the procedure.
In your case, the necessary software drivers you need to obtain can be downloaded from the Support section of Dell’s website
There are actually two models of the Dell Dimension 4600 listed – the standard model and the ‘Dell Dimension 4600C’. If you have the latter, you’ll need to enter that as model number at the page linked above, but the available downloads for the Dimension 4600 can be obtained from this link
The drivers you need, according to that list, are:
- Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 (D)
- Intel Chipset Software Installation utility
- Intel 10/100 LOM (LOM stands for Lan On Motherboard)
You should also visit http://www.nvidia.com and download the latest display driver from there.
What’s happened is that you’ve simply installed Windows and not installed the device drivers you need for your system to operate fully, correctly and efficiently. Have you installed a video driver for that FX5200 display card? If so uninstall it again now! It shouldn’t be there yet! Here’s the procedure to follow after downloading the necessary drivers and having them ready:
- Uninstall any nVidia driver from Add/Remove programs
- Uninstall the display card from Device Manager (Right-click My Computer, choose Properties and you’ll find it on the Hardware tab)
- Reboot and cancel from any Hardware detection Wizard that might pop up. Allow your system to use a standard VGA display, and don’t worry about a lower resolution screen for the moment if you experience one.
- Run the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility. That’s your motherboard chipset driver installation, and that ‘SM BUS controller is the bit that allows the various parts of your PCs motherboard to work together correctly.
- Install your downloaded nVidia display driver.
- Install the soundcard driver. (You’ll most likely find available updates to it later on at www.creative.com Updates for Dell computers with SoundBlaster cards are usually listed as separate downloads)
- Install the network driver. (Or, if you’re not going to use it simply go into BIOS Setup and disable the onboard LAN. You don’t need to have it if you don’t use it.)
Note: There are three separate modem drivers available on that download page. You’ll need to determine which one is needed for the specific modem in your system. Download and install that, and the modem will most likely run more efficiently. It’s quite likely that it’s using a ‘generic’ driver also.
That procedure should get your system working correctly with a bit of luck. The motherboard chipset drivers should really be loaded first of all, before any other drivers are installed. If you have any residual problems afterwards, format again and start over, this time installing the motherboard drivers first.
Finally, just what is that Ethernet controller for?
Well if you’re using dial-up internet and you only have a single PC, then it’s no good for anything at all, and would be best disabled. But if you want to connect another system to it to share files, printer and internet you’ll need to use it. And if you decide to upgrade to broadband internet at some stage in the future you’ll be happy to have it as well. A broadband modem connected to an Ethernet port is a much better and more reliable connection than one connected to USB!

(No, but your DSL provider may be able to advise you via its tech support line. You may have to get a knowledgeable friend to help as although it isn't too hard it does need some knowledge. -PZ) JCPosted: 19/07/2008 re: What is an Ethernet controller? 'Ethernet controller', for the Beginners, is the Lan socket/set-up.
Most ADSL/Cable modem 'set-ups', actually recommends this over the use of a USB connection, why?
Because of the 'increased stability during use' factor.
Most do even 'include' a choice of 'connecting cables'......one for USB, one for LAN.
One will have a USB plug at one end, with a larger type Phone-plug at the other (similar to LAN).
The other will have these LAN plugs, at both ends.(This is the LAN cable, the one to use!)
As for that SM BUS controller, try looking in the Windows 'section'...of "My Computer"(how to get there, read on).
My Computer/Local Drive C:/Windows/i386/Drivers/....
You should spot 'SM Bus Controller',now. In the List(of Drivers).
OK, now, you have found out 'where' it is, Close it all down, and try the "Add new hardware" program.
Do a manual Search (to select the 'new hardware',ie: SM Bus Controller)....and use the "BROWSE" option........in the same manner as you just did in finding it before.
IF you do it correctly, the "BROWSE" option will have inserted the CORRECT 'path'...to this 'driver.
Go ahead, with next step...which is...to load it...... do it, and you're done.
The 'multi-media Audio controller'...could be from that Audigy2 Sound-card?.....OR, it could be from that Winfast video-capture card??
Un-install both packages of software, and re-install.
Especially Winfast.
It can be a bit finicky, to install (won't install properly). Will say "can't find BDA device"...or words, to that effect).
That's 'why' there is no 'Multi-media Audio Controller'.
You have to use that "BROWSE" option, again....to locate your Winfast card(the BDA device), to 'manually' install it.
Once this is done, the Winfast Install CD needs to be 're-run'.
Again, and, this time, it should work.
It can be a bit of a fiddle, doing it this way, but, hey, I have a Winfast TV-card, too. Have had to resort to this method, when doing a Re-install.
And, practice does, indeed, make perfect...using the "Browse" option. (you do learn 'How-to'!....gain 'knowledge/experience', by it.)
If you feel 'cheated', that if what I have told you...is incorrect.......well, that's all 'part-n-parcel' of learning, if you did spot where I went wrong, because what I have told you is nothing but a'guide-line'...to point you in the RIGHT direction.
Ad, that's all I intended to do...to point the way...for you.
It is your computer, right, and you do not want to pay a technician...to come fix it,for you. (@ $88.00+ an hour...half that per. half-hour, after that.)
Yeah, right, so get smart, and start learning 'How' to fix it, yourself.
In other words, "Stop being so lazy, getting(using) others ...to do your 'dirty-work' for you."
It's your computer, you know better than anybody else...exactly what is wrong with...because you was using it.
I wasn't, either was anyone else you use ...to fix it.
That's my 'gripe'(and it's a very valid one), for this month.

(We need more information about your problem. Well, I installed the 'Broadcom 440x Integrated Controller' drivers from Dell and then I had a nice Local Area Connection tab in my Network Connections folder (the old 'Ethernet Controller' in device manager vanished).
So I figured I'd try switching over to the Ethernet connection. After at least an hour of frustration messing with settings and so forth (trying to manually enter IP address, etc.) I finally reset my modem while my computer was on (and the connection enabled). Firewall was off.
It came up clean with all the IP stuff, and it was connected. Simple solution, wish I would have tried it sooner.
(Thankls for the tip Dick. I'll post it as a separate tip for readers. -PZ)

(Sorry Dan, but I'm still not sure what your problem is or what you want to do. Tell me what you have and what you want to achieve, not how you want to do it. For instamce, do you have an Internet account where you want to use the PC? -PZ) NatePosted: 30/03/2008 re: What is an Ethernet controller? (What did you do with the drivers Simova? -PZ) DanPosted: 21/03/2008 re: What is an Ethernet controller? I have the same Ethernet controller issue with my dell dimension T500 desktop. I downloaded the driver from dell's website. But when I ran it it opned up a html page saying "Follow installation instructions from ussing dell's documentation CD". Problem is that I do not have that CD. Anyhelp on how to actuall install it? When I tried to run the install driver option from the device manager, the search did not find any drivers !!!! Help pls
(You have a few options. You could ask Dell for help. You could use the original disk that came with the PC. You could use a tool such as Belarc Advisor to see if you can work out what driver is needed. Why do you need it anyway - isn't it already working? Try deleting it from the Device Manager and let Windows find and install it again. -PZ) paulhuPosted: 13/03/2008 re: What is an Ethernet controller? i am in same boat, i have downloaded the most uptodate driver for nvide, but still have this problem, i went to hpcompaq homepage but cant see any drivers, i am using hp compaq desktop, with a ge ofrce fx 5200 graphics card. A Syed Ahmed Ali Posted: 13/02/2008 re: What is an Ethernet controller? I have also reinstalled windowsxp on my HPCompaq Desktop which resultsinto two drivers missing ethernet controller and multimedia audio device now i don't have ne driver cd nothing and themodel # isPD 1073. JasonPosted: 06/02/2008 My ethernet controller doesn't work either. I've tried everything. It's a Dell Inspiron 6000. I once re-installed windows on my desktop pc, and it all worked out great. So, I did the same on the laptop, but forgot that they didn't send me the driver discs. So, I went onto another computer, typed in my service tag at dell.com, download all available drivers (except for ones used in Japan and such) to my USB key drive, and then dropped the drivers onto my laptop from there. But, ethernet controller still doesn't have a driver. What should I do?

This is for all of us less computer lingo the better people (which I am proud to be one) I had to reinstall xp and when I was done I had the same three come up. I got onto this site to fix it, I could no remember what I had done the last time. What Terry said seemed like a lot to go thru then when I read about the drivers it hit me. When I got my system it came with all the cd's I needed. All you have to do is use the same drivers cd you use to erase windows. Just put it in while you are running windows and it will automatically create a list of the drivers you need and you chose select all and let it install them. It is that easy. csimpsonPosted: 24/12/2007 You are wrong You are an idiot, Terry. You don't need to install the OS with the drivers already there or on a disk of some sort. All you need to do is install the OS then go online and download the drivers. Unless I read your answer wrong. srinivasanPosted: 24/12/2007 how to install ethernet controller. hi
i using dell latitude d600
I install windows xp
i cant find ethernet controller driver. so i cant use ethernet. How to install the ethernet controller. where to find the driver. Please help me.
(Do you have an Ethernet controller in the PC? If so, perhaps you need to check on the Dell website and download the driver for it. But I would have expected Windows XP to be able to find it. -PZ) AmirPosted: 04/12/2007 re: What is an Ethernet controller? How can i find the driver i need?
(Within reason, your operating system should work that out for you. What OS are you using? If it's Windows, go into Device Manager and delete the device. Then Windows will rediscover it and should install it correctly. -PZ) Posted: 30/10/2007 re: Ethernet controller? (Perhaps you should delete each of them from the list and then allow Windows to find them again and install them. You may need your original CD for the PC. -PZ) charbelPosted: 30/10/2007 re: What is an Ethernet controller? (What? -PZ) frank WoerlePosted: 24/10/2007 re: What is an Ethernet controller? There may be one problem since its a package Dell, it may not have come with a Motherboard Driver CD and may have had the complete re-install on the Hard Drive Partion.
Depending on the install procedure that was used Peter may also have wiped that partion through reformatting the drive and then he may only be installing the OS of a CD which doesnt contain those particular drivers.
If thats the case, its time to go to the Dell web site.
Good Luck Pete...Frank. JeffCPosted: 23/10/2007 re: What is an Ethernet controller? From the 'responses' here, it sounds more like a case of "Oooops! Forgot to INSTALL motherboard drivers, when I did the 'clean install/re-install !"
Where's your computer's 'motherboard's drivers' CD, use it and it should solve your problem ?! katyPosted: 22/10/2007 erthernet controller pops up and says to install I have been having this message for about two weeks. I use a cable modem that plugs into the back of my laptop that looks like a phone plug. I have had this for over a year. Why all of a sudden is it doing this and do I need to download it?
Thanks
Katy
(Hi Katy. I'd suggest that you contact the cable Internet company and ask them for help. I presume they supplied the modem. Otherwise it might be a good idea to run the Device Manager in Windows and delete the Ethernet Controller. Then Windows should rediscover it and install it properly. -PZ) MakitaPosted: 17/07/2007 Sound Card I have a Dell Dimension 4600c

(It's quite probable that your operating system already has the driver for your Ethernet Card. What makes you think you need a new driver? Which OS are you using - Windows XP? If you know the model number of the card you can Google for the drivers anyway, or go straight to www.driversguide.com -PZ) jayeshPosted: 11/04/2005 lan gets disconected Hello ,

awaiting for reply . andrew peter collinsPosted: 08/12/2004 re: What is an ethernet controller The one thing i forgot to say in my previous message is that the great thing about DELL pcs is that if you need to de-bug and do a full re-install for whatever reason, all the cd-roms are there to get you back to factory specs and their backup telephone service is excellent (unlike NEC, long story). They also have other cd-roms for Sonic and the DELL experience the previous one if you wanna copy another disc (not that we would do such a thing) which makes DELL one of the leaders in pcs. one more thing i would like to mention is that i have bi-polar disorder so i had to start off using XP pro, a daunting experience after ten years of not being in front of a pc screen but here i am 4 years down the track navigating through it like a pro (well almost). Getting back to the ethernet issue, don't use an adapter if you can avoid it. i used to on my pc untill i was told i didn't need to. I could just plug straight into the LAN socket. See. I told you i was still learning but if you don't ask you don't learn so there's nothing to ashamed about. cheers Andrew. andrew peter collinsPosted: 08/12/2004 re: What is an Ethernet controller? as i own a DELL 2400 i knew about the LAN connecter on the back. the thing that amazes me the most is that some people who have this option still use an ethernet adapter to connect to the internet thus wasting a USB port in the process. i am running broadband cable so i just run the lead from the modem straight into the LAN socket and keep my USB ports free for other applications (printers scanners etc) and as for buying a passive hub (a glorified USB double adapter) just don't..please. i know this did not answer this guys question but if you have a LAN socket.....use it, especially if you're running broadband. the rule of thumb in all electronic systems is to minimize the length of all cables in any system and to eliminate where possible any inline processors. if you eliminate unneeded stuff you will improve the performance of your pc. cheers. davePosted: 01/12/2004 re: What is an Ethernet controller? Dell PC's usually come with seperate cd's to install the drivers after a clean install - Sound has it's own cd and the LAN driver is bundled with a heap of other drivers on a system cd
in total you should have about 4 installation cd's with DELL printed on them.
One is the O/S another Sound another is for Burning Software (if you have a burner) and another for the modem and another for the rest of the drivers. (they just had to be different!)
Cheers
