Double happy graphics

Wednesday, 27 January, 2010

My monitor has two port -- DVI and VGA.

My graphic card has the same.

Can I connect both DVI and VGA cables at the same time? Or just need to use one cable, DVI or VGA?

Thanks!

Htoo , ,

That depends on what you're trying to do.

If you just want the monitor to display what;s on the PC, choose either. The DVI output will be slightly better as long as it's connected to a DVI port on the monitor. (That is, digital all the way.)

But if you're expecting that using both ports will do something special, I have to ask what on earth you think it will achieve. Do you expect better pictures? Brighter pictures? Two images? 3D? Smellavision?

If you have a regular car that takes petrol (gasoline) would you try putting both petrol and diesel fuel in the tank? What would you expect that to do -- give you twice the horsepower?

Your monitor will have a setting to decide which input it accepts (VGA or DVI) so if you did use two cables only one of them would work until you changed the setting.

Better luck with the car perhaps?

Htoo, consider yourself lucky....that you have both VGA and DVI sockets.
If one should stop working.....you have the other one, to fall back on.
But, yes, you can connect/use both....at the same time.
I did it...out of curiousity, saw little difference...in monitor's resolution quality.
On my monitor, the 'default setting' worked... for both cables,PZ.
(This depends on your the quality...of your Monitor, actually.)
Left the VGA cable 'in place'...so I would know where it would be, if I ever needed it...later.

(Yes JC, but the monitor would use only one input or the other. Having two connected is handy but doesn't affect the image. -PZ)
