Have I installed the fan incorrectly?

Thursday, 01 April, 2004

I've just fitted a 3/4 horsepower Levitron 18 case fan to my PC, but there's a problem. I fitted it to the rear panel, blowing air into the case. The trouble is, as soon as I turn the system on, the PC is sucked backwards off the desk.

That's a common mistake. Those fans are meant to be mounted in the top panel of a case, but still with the air passing into the case. As the name suggests, Levitron fans are meant to act like a helicopter blade, taking the weight off heavy systems, thereby minimising the chance of overloading the desk. The Levitron 18 has a lifting power of 18 pounds (around 8 kg here in Australia). One big disadvantage is that they have to be kept running at all times else the advantage is lost and the desk may collapse.

A word of caution, never mount the fan on the bottom panel of the PC. Because the fan will then be sucking air out of the case at around 10,000 cubic feet per minute, and there's a danger that the air pressure within the case will drop to the point where the case could implode. And there's no way you'll be able to get the CD drive open until the system is shut down, and then only with a paperclip.

PS: Please note date of question.

re: Have I installed the fan incorrectly?
Terry, your warning regarding the possibility of an imploded PC case as a result of the fan being mounted at the base, while pertinent, is not quite correct.

In my experience, I have found that the case stays rigid, and it is the universe around it that collapses under the force of the fan, consequently being drawn inside the case.

We are, in fact, all inhabiting a universe that exists inside my 90's model Maccase Galaxy case (hence the name), and have been there for around five years now.

Have you noticed that air pollution has decreased as a result of the kick-ass air filter at the front of the case?
