Kingston’s Wi-Drive is designed to add storage wirelessly for Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch only. It’s a stark contrast to Seagate’s GoFlex Satellite, which does the same thing — where the Seagate drive is a regular hard drive, the Kingston uses flash memory and is therefore a lot lighter and more portable, but limited to iOS devices only and accessed via a free app. One trick that the Wi-Drive has up its sleeve compared to the more storage-rich GoFlex Satellite is that it supports a Wi-Fi pass-through mode, at least in theory. This means you’re not locked down to its network, and can connect to it and then an internet-facing service, allowing you to still get email, surf the web and more on your iPhone or iPad. We found that aspect of its performance a little flaky, however, and often had to restart one or the other connection to keep both going smoothly. It’s also limited in playback terms to only native iOS formats, which is most troubling for video files. If you want absolute portability, the Kingston Wi-Drive has it in spades over the Seagate Satellite, but as it’s a less flexible device, it’s also a more limited one.
